Breakout game for Warriors buries J-Hawks

Cedar Rapids Washington got the offensive output its coach has expected all year as the Warriors whipped Jefferson, 6-0, Saturday night in an MVC boys soccer game at Kingston Stadium.

The game was a make-up from last Thursday night, which was postponed by severe weather.

“We have kind of expected this all year,” Washington Coach JP Graham said of Washington's offensive outburst. “We put some people in different spots and they did what they are supposed to. I am proud of them.”

The Warriors (7-7, 6-4 MVC) put the pressure on the J-Hawks (7-6, 5-5) early and never looked back.

Washington got a big lead early, scoring three goals in a three minute span to all but put the game away in the first 15 minutes of play.

Jack Sundermann got things going early for the Warriors with a goal 10 minutes into the game.

“The first goal from Jack was key,” Graham said. “We haven’t had a lead much this year. It was big for us to get a lead early.”

Kimu Kasha and Austin Bergstrom added goals in the 11th minute and 13th minute, respectively, as the Warriors built a 3-0 lead it held at halftime.

Washington’s defense did its part all game but played particularly well in the first 20 minutes of the second half. The Warriors shut the J-Hawks out while their offense took a short break from the scoring frenzy.

“We knew they were quick up top. We didn’t want to get beat one on one,” Graham said of the defensive plan. “We were able to stand them up and force passes.”

The scoring drought didn’t last long for the dominating Warriors. They got a pair of goals from Flynn Heald in a three minute span to push the difference to five.

“They were all fantastic balls, whether it was from the backs or mids,” Heald said.

As if 5-0 wasn’t good enough, the Warriors’ Kenan Newbold put one more ball in the back of the J-Hawk net with just over two minutes left in the game.

“We changed our warmup a bit and it helped everyone a lot,” Heald said. “We wanted to expose the outsides and we got the ball outside well.”

Jefferson Coach John O'Connor was not happy with his team's performance.

“I have nothing good to say,” O'Connor said. “My dad always said if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.”

With only two weeks left before districts the J-Hawks will look to bounce back Tuesday at Dubuque Senior.

“We can’t let this (tonight) define us,” O’Connor said.

The Warriors will look to keep the momentum going Tuesday when they travel to Dubuque Wahlert.

“We got some confidence going forward,” Graham said. “We know how good we are and we showed it for the first time in a while.”

Warriors drop a pair to Lions, Hawks

A goal by Prairie's Sam Drysdale in overtime lifted the Hawks past Washington, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a boys soccer game at Kingston Stadium.

Austin Reutzel had a goal in regulation for the Hawks and Spencer Gaddis had an assist.

Washington's Dennis Kravchenko tallied a goal for the Warriors off an assist from Mike Eken.

The loss was the second of the day for the Warriors. They were beaten by Linn-Mar, 2-0, in the morning game.

Washington is 6-7 overall, 5-4 in the MVC.

Warriors waltz past Waterloo East, 7-1

Flynn Heald scored three goals to power Cedar Rapids Washington past Waterloo East, 7-1, Thursday night in a boys soccer game at Kingston Stadium.

Washington (6-5, 5-2 MVC) also got goals from Austin Bergstrom, Daren Mangold, Jack Sundermann and Max Versteegh.

Versteegh had three assists. Heald, Riyad Ajram and Jacob Bjornsen also had assists.

Warriors beat Xavier boys in a shootout, 1-0

Washington toppled Xavier, 1-0, in a shootout Tuesday in a battle of ranked boys soccer teams at Xavier.

The score was tied 0-0 after two overtimes. Washington connected on four shootout goals, Xavier on three.

Washington (5-5, 4-2 MVC) is ranked 16th in Class 3A. Xavier (3-5-1, 3-4) is No. 3 in 2A.
