Washington - Boys Swimming

Warriors 7th at boys state swim meet

MARSHALLTOWN -- Based on times from the district meets, Washington Coach Chris Cruise said he felt his team could finish anywhere from second to the seventh at Saturday's boys state swimming meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.

Unfortunately for Cruise and the Warriors, seventh place it was.

Muscatine won two relays and three individual events and the Muskies repeated as state champions.

Muscatine rolled up 177.5 points to easily beat second-place West Des Moines Dowling, which finished with 135.

Washington finished seventh with 115 points. The Warriors did not win any events.

The pre-meet power rankings had the Warriors at number six, just below district runner-up Dubuque Senior.

Senior jumped ahead of Washington by finishing fourth.

Meet champion Muscatine entered the contest at seventh in the power rankings. Dowling, which finished a distant second, was the favorite.

“We had a good meet with some great individual swims, Cruise said.  “A couple of kids didn’t hold their positions, but we had some who dropped their times significantly. And we had some who dropped their times but still didn’t hold onto to their positions."

Senior Morgan Barnes had the Warriors' highest finish with a second in the 500 freestyle. Junior teammate Josh Hughes came in third. Barnes had won the district title.  Both of them recorded their lifetime best times at state.

The same pair finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free after taking the top two spots at districts.

Warrior senior Ian Ford, who had claimed the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke in last week’s districts, finished third and fourth in the same events at Marshalltown.

Ford’s time in the 200 IM broke the Washington school record dating back to 1983.

Hughes, Barnes, Ford and freshman Jared Thorson closed the state meet on a high note by placing sixth in the 400 free relay.

After four stellar years at Washington, Barnes and Ford will swim next year for the University of South Dakota. The school has moved from Division II to Division I competition and is constructing a new acquatics complex.

“It’s been a great four years here at Wash,” Ford said Saturday. “I’m proud of our team and happy we went out with a good meet.

“We didn’t come away with the big trophy or banner, but everybody stepped up.”

Ford said the team had set a goal to finish in the top five and came close.

“Everybody did their best,” Barnes said. “That’s not you can ask for. And we did well.”

Cruise said the Warriors were hindered this year by having only eight meet qualifiers, while other teams that finished higher had as many as 13.

Cruise also said many of the Warriors tapered for last week's district meet in order for the school to claim its 49th straight district title.  Other schools that faced lesser competition at districts were able to peak at the state meet.

“But,” said Cruise, “you can’t score points here if you’re sitting at home. So that’s the trade-off in winning the district.

“Overall, though, we had a good day today. Our swimmers competed with a lot of heart and a lot of pride.”

Jefferson senior Kristian Anderson finished eighth in the 100 butterfly, earning the J-Hawks five points. Jefferson tied for 19th place.

Kennedy's 200 free relay of Harrison Moore, Brandon Holmes, Chandler Heisler and Dylan Casey finished 11th in the 200 free relay for four [points. The Cougars tied for 21st place.

Linn-Mar did not score.

Muscatine took first place in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, and the Muskies' Trent Jackson won the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He earned All-American consideration in the 200. He also swam on the 200 free relay. Travis Greenwald also claimed first place in the 100 breaststroke and earned All-American consideration. He also swam on the 200 medley and 200 free relays that earned All-American consideration.

Clinton's Matt Boyd and Dowling's Jonathan Fiepke also claimed two individual titles. Boyd won the 200 individual medley and 100 back, earning All-American consideration in both events. Fiepke won the 50 and 100 freestyle, and swam on the Maroons' championship 400 free relay. He earned All-American consideration in all three events.

Washington - Boys Swimming

Warriors splash to 49th district title in row

Nobody tossed Chris Cruise in the pool, took a victory lap or beat their chest Saturday, but don't get the wrong idea about the Cedar Rapids Washington boys swim team.

The Warriors were delighted to win their 49th straight district title at the Jefferson pool, extending an amazing streak that began in 1964 and shows no signs of ending.

The celebration wasn't subdued, just semi-professional.

"We're going to celebrate appropriately later on when we're not in front of a whole bunch of people," said Cruise, who has been Washington's head coach since 1999. "Our kids had a great meet today. They swam extremely well."

The Warriors began the day with a wary eye on Dubuque Senior, and for good reason. The Rams are ranked No. 5 in the Iowa Swim Coaches Association power ratings and the Warriors are No. 6, so on paper Dubuque Senior had a slight edge.

Washington nudged the Rams by only two points at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet in Waterloo two weeks ago, so a 49th district title was no sure thing.

The Warriors proved themselves to be the stronger club by winning six of 11 events and topping Dubuque Senior by a count of 298 to 277 in the eight-team meet.

Nonetheless, there were some anxious moments heading into Saturday with the streak on the line.

"There's a lot of unnecesssary anxiety, I guess," said senior Ian Ford, who won two individual events and swam on the winning medley relay. "We always kind of worry too much about it. It kind of hangs over us.

"It's been going on for almost half a century. It's kind of a duty we have to keep it alive."

All of Washington's district winners advance to the state meet in Marshalltown next Saturday, but the Warriors won't know who else qualified for the state meet until all the districts are finished. Two meets were postponed Saturday due to weather conditions in central Iowa and have been rescheduled for Monday.

Washington and Dubuque Senior combined to win all 11 events - six by the Warriors, five by the Rams - but Washington set the tone early by winning the first three races and jumping ahead.

Ford, Sami Scheetz, Jared Thorson and Scott Allison opened the district meet by capturing the 200 yard medley. Morgan Barnes and Josh Hughes then finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle for the Warriors and Ford returned to take the 200 individual medley.

Thorson, a freshman, claimed the 100 butterfly for another gold medal. Barnes won the 500 freestyle and Ford took the 100 backstroke to put the Warriors in excellent shape coming into the final events.

"I was surprised by how big the lead was," said Barnes, who set a pool record in the 500 freestyle in 4:44.69.

Cruise wasn't sure what to expect Saturday after barely nudging Dubuque Senior at the MVC meet.

"It's a little tough to actually sit down and predict what's going to happen here and there until the meet gets going and you get a chance to see how things stack up," he said. "I thought we had some great swims out of our second and third-tier kids today.

"Scott Allison made some huge time drops, just like he did last year for the district meet. He was a big key to our success today, but top to bottom it was a total team victory."

Allison placed second in the 50 freestyle, helped the Warriors finish third in the 200 freestyle relay and placed fourth in the 100 freestyle in addition to swimming the anchor on the victorious 200 medley relay.

Hughes placed second in the 200 freestyle, took third in the 500 freestyle and helped the Warriors finish second in the 400 freestyle relay and third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Ford, Barnes and most of Washington's top swimmers have won district meets before, but it was a new experience for Thorson, a budding star as a ninth grader.

"I think it's pretty sweet," said Thorson. "I think it's pretty cool to have 49 in a row."

Barnes will be swimming at the University of South Dakota next year and has no regrets that he won't be around when the Warriors aim for their 50th straight district title.

"Nah, I've had my four years," he said. "It's been fun. But like Ian said, it's a lot of stress sometimes."

Kennedy placed sixth in the meet with 116 points. Dylan Casey (200 free) and Chandler Heisler (50 free) placed sixth for the Cougars. Kennedy finished third in the 400 freestyle relay, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.

Jefferson finished seventh in the standings with 102 points. Kristian Anderson took second in the 100 butterfly and placed fifth in the 50 freestyle. Lance Scallon swam third in the 100 backstroke. The J-Hawks took fourth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Washington, Kennedy and Jefferson will find out Monday night which of their swimmers have qualified for state, once all the district meets are finished and statewide qualifying times can be compared.

The Warriors hope to use the district title as a springboard for high honors at state.

"It's hard to say where we'll finish at state," said Ford. "We've got some good swimmers. It's going to come down to how bad we want it. I think we have a lot of guys on our team who really want it and hopefully that pays off."

Dowling Catholic, Johnston, Ankeny and West Des Moines Valley are the top four teams in the power rankings. All four of those schools swim in the CIML.

Hal Krizan was Washington's head coach when the district streak began in 1964. Jim Voss succeeded Krizan and kept it going, and now Cruise has pushed the streak to 49.

"It's great to have it in the books," said Cruise. "It was a great win for our team, but hopefully because it sets us up for next week."

Washington - Boys Swimming

Warriors by a whisker at MVC swim meet

WATERLOO - Ian Ford says he stands 6-foot-4 1/2 inches tall, and that extra half-inch is important.

It helped Cedar Rapids Washington win the Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet Saturday afternoon by a fingertip at the Waterloo Central Middle School pool.

The Warriors edged Dubuque Senior, 383-381, for the title, partially because Ford won the 100-yard backstroke by one-hundredth of a second to give Washington three extra points in the team standings.

If Ford had finished second in that race - if he had been just two-hundredths of a second slower - the Warriors would have finished second in the team standings by a single point.

That's how close it was.

"It dawned on me right before the race," said Ford. "My coach warned me, 'It's basically going to come down to winning that event for us to win the meet.'"

Ford and Conner Clements of Cedar Falls swam neck-and-neck for practically the entire race. It looked like Clements might have been a tad ahead of Ford coming down the stretch, but it was hard to tell and Ford wasn't taking any chances. He dug deeper and finished the race with an extra burst of speed.

"Probably in the last 15 yards or so, I was like, 'Screw it, it's going to hurt, but I've got to do it for my team,'" he said.

It wasn't the last race of the day - there were still two events to go after the 100 backstroke - but it was the most dramatic finish and perhaps the most important on a day filled with tight races.

The winner of each individual race collected 20 points for his team. The runner-up got 17. Subtract three points and the Warriors go home unhappy in second place.

"Having Ian win by one-hundredth was a big key," said Washington Coach Chris Cruise. "That was three additional points that we wouldn't necessarily have had if he had finished even a whisker behind that. It was a big difference."

Washington picked up 47 points in the 100 backstroke when Ford finished first, Jared Thorson placed fourth (15 points) and Logan Barnes grabbed seventh (12 points). That 1-4-7 finish was huge.

The Warriors led Dubuque Senior by eight points, 349-341, entering the 400-yard freestyle relay, which was the 11th and final event in the meet. That meant the Warriors had to finish no worse than second in the 400 relay, and that's exactly what they did to clinch the championship.

Dubuque Senior won the 400 relay and collected 40 points for its final tally of 381. Washington placed second and got 34 points for its final count of 383.

If the Warriors had placed third in the 400 relay, they would have gotten 32 points and finished in a flat-footed tie with Dubuque Senior with 381 for the day.

That's how close it was between fifth-ranked Washington and eighth-ranked Dubuque Senior. Cruise called it a significant victory for the Warriors as they pursue their goals of a high finish at the state meet.

"I think when you set the tone for winning like this, that helps you later on when things are close, because you're feeling good about yourself and you have confidence in yourself and your ability to pull something out when it gets tight and the going is tough," he said.

There was another dramatic race earlier Saturday when Washington teammates Josh Hughes and Morgan Barnes finished a tight 1-2 in the grueling 500 yard freestyle. Hughes won the race by 12-hundredths of a second in 4:50.89, with Barnes touching in 4:51.01. They collected 37 points for the Warriors right there.

Hughes and Barnes battle like that all the time in practice, and they did the same thing two years ago in the MVC sophomore meet in the Waterloo Middle School pool. Hughes won that race by four-hundredths of a second, which is incredible for a 20-lap event.

Hughes and Barnes swam in adjacent lanes Saturday, with Hughes in Lane 3 and Barnes in Lane 4. They battled stroke for stroke, for 500 long yards, pushing each other to the end.

"Being next to each other is always a benefit," said Barnes. "It's really fun to get in the pool and go against him."

Someone wondered how they manage to keep it a friendly rivalry. "Sometimes it's not!" Hughes shot back quickly, laughing.

They were fierce rivals when they were younger, he explained, before they became teammates. "We're close friends now," he said.

Hughes and Barnes can breathe to either side during races, and they deliberately alternate sides so they can look at each other during the race and see who's ahead. When Hughes is breathing to his right, Barnes will breathe to his left. And when Hughes is breathing to his left, Barnes will breathe to his right. They kept an eye on each other practically the entire time Saturday.

"It's been kind of fun to watch," said Cruise. "The two of them have a great rapport. They work hard. They train with each other, and I think that really helps push both of them to do things that maybe they wouldn't do."

Barnes, who has signed to swim at South Dakota next year, was named the Mississippi Division Swimmer of the Year Saturday for his accomplishments during the entire MVC campaign. He won the 200 yard freestyle Saturday, beating Hughes by 1.54 seconds.

The Warriors also won the 200 medley relay with Ford, Sami Scheetz, Thorson and Scott Allison splashing to victory. Ford finished second in the 200 IM, Thorson placed third in the 100 fly and Nick Durin swam fourth in the 100 fly.

Cedar Rapid Jefferson placed seventh in the team standings with 130 points. Kristian Anderson finished second in the 100 fly and placed third in the 100 backstroke.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Linn-Mar tied for eighth place in the 11-team meet. Chandler Heisler placed fifth in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle for the Cougars. Nate Greve finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke for the Lions.

Washington - Boys Swimming

Hughes leads Warriors at strong Jim Voss meet

The Cedar Rapids Washington boys swimming team enjoys a stiff challenge from top competition, even if it means the Warriors don't collect all the first-place medals.

That's why they invited a strong field to the 2012 Jim Voss Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Washington pool.

The meet featured No. 3 Ankeny, No. 4 West Des Moines Valley, No. 9 Cedar Falls, No. 10 Bettendorf, two strong clubs from Waukesha, Wis., and No. 5 Washington.

"Competing against the best teams allows you to get better and prove yourself against stiff competition," said Washington Coach Chris Cruise. "You don't learn a whole lot by swimming against teams that you're far superior or way inferior to.

"When we have a meet like this, where there's a lot of real competitive teams and a lot of real good swimmers, it really strengthens our team and really prepares us for our end-of-the-season goals and the things we want to try and do."

The Warriors feel they swam well, but Josh Hughes was their only winner, taking the grueling 500-yard freestyle. Morgan Barnes and Ian Ford, their two top seniors, had near-misses and finished second in a pair of exciting races that served as good measuring sticks.

"We want to see how we're doing compared to the rest of the state," said Barnes, who placed second in the 200 freestyle by a whisker. "It's fun to see how we're doing. I enjoy seeing the type of competition that we don't get to see too often."

Lucas Klinker of Ankeny captured the 200 freestyle in 1:46.38. Barnes touched nine-hundredths of a second later in 1:46.47.

Ford had a similar experience in the 200 individual medley. Jacob Melville of Waukesha West won the race in 1:59.49, with Ford touching less than a half-second later in 1:59.91.

"I look forward to this meet every year, mainly because it's two fast teams from Wisconsin and several of the fastest teams in Iowa that are going to make a good show at state," said Ford. "I'm not discouraged or disappointed in any way, shape or form."

Ankeny won the team championship by a half-point over West Des Moines Valley, 307 to 306.5, in an incredibly tight finish. Washington placed third with 208.5 points.

Ankeny won four of 11 races and the two teams from Waukesha, Wis., combined for four other victories. That left one win apiece for Washington, Cedar Falls and West Des Moines Valley.

Lucas Klinker (Ankeny), Jacob Klinker (Ankeny), Jacob Melville (Waukesha West) and Alex Swain (Waukesha South) participated in two victories apiece.

Hughes finished third in the 200 freestyle for Washington, Barnes was third in the 100 freestyle, Ford placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and Jared Thorson finished fourth in the 100 butterly. The Warriors placed third in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Cruise thinks the meet was a good learning experience for his team.

"How does the old saying go? Sometimes you learn more from a loss than you do from a win," he remarked. "And hopefully our kids will take some of the things they did today and feel good about the gains they made in time and the way they were able to fight and scratch and claw and really keep up with a lot of these guys.

"But I hope they also realize that we've got a lot of things to learn and a lot of improvements to make. Sometimes they listen a little bit better when you have a situation like that, where they don't necessarily win and don't feel like they're on top of the world."

Cruise is looking forward to the conference, district and state meets in coming weeks.

"We continue to see some good things on a night-in and night-out basis from our kids, a little bit here and a little bit there," he said. "When you add all of that up and put it all together, at the end of the year I think we'll be pretty competitive."
