Warriors nipped by Little Hawks

Iowa City High won the 400 freestyle relay — the meet’s final event — and escaped with an 87-83 win over Washington Tuesday night (Dec. 21) at the Warriors’ pool.

Washington had three individual winners — Scott Allison (50 free), Ian Ford (100 back) and Josh Hughes (100 breast) — and won the 200 medley relay.  The Warriors’ depth kept them within striking distance.

Collin McAllister won two individual events — the 200 and 500 free — to lead City High.

Warriors roll past Bettendorf

Illness had Washington at less than full-strength Tuesday night (Dec. 14) against Bettendorf.  Depth made the Warriors an easy winner.

Junior Scott Allison was a four-time winner and Josh Hughes won three to lead Washington past Bettendorf, 107-63, at the Washington pool.

Allison won the 50 free and 100 free and also swam on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.  Hughes won the 200 free and 100 breaststroke and was on the 200 free relay team.

Chris Cruise has helped Cedar Rapids Washington win eight state titles in boys' swimming during the past 25 years as an athlete, assistant coach and head coach, but that eighth title in 2008 was the best of the bunch.

Warriors, Barnes sink J-Hawks

Morgan Barnes of Washington placed in two events at the state swimming meet last year, which was good for a sophomore. He’d like to do even better this season.

Barnes finished sixth in the 500 freestyle and took eighth in the 200 freestyle at state last February. He had mixed emotions about that.

“It was all right,” he said, “but I was a little bit disappointed.”

He had nothing to be disappointed about Tuesday night (Dec. 7) during a dual meet against Jefferson.
