Warriors show speed, but Lions take title

In its own Warrior Invitational women’s track meet Tuesday night at Kingston Stadium, Washington unleashed a trio of sophomore sprinters who teamed with some veterans to nearly topple favored Linn-Mar.

Speedster Kadejah Sanders led the Warrior contingent with four wins, including her first-ever victory in the 100 meter dash. She joined fellow sophomores Megan Muller and Jasmyne Jones for first-place finishes in the 4x100, 4x200 and 800 sprint medley relays.

In all, Washington won eight of 19 events in the seven-team field. Linn-Mar claimed five wins, but superior depth allowed the Lions to outpoint the Warriors, 134-123, to clinch the team title.

With three field event champions, Prairie came in third with 105 points and Kennedy was fourth with 79.

“I knew it was going to be competitive,” said Washington Coach Frank Scherrman. “This is our best meet this year. I’m happy with it.”

Sanders, who started out in track at McKinley Middle School in seventh grade and competed with the varsity last year, was the only 100-meter runner to crack 13 seconds in windy conditions and won her race convincingly.

“I’m getting better,” she said afterward, “thanks to my coaches, who keep pushing me. But we’ve got a lot of good sprinters on our team. In the relays I just try to put us in the lead if I start or make sure nobody passes me.”

She ran the first legs of the 4x100 and sprint medley and anchored the 4x200. Besides the other sophs, senior Taylor Vogel ran on two of the winning relays and senior Brooke Foreman on the other one.

Foreman also collected extremely easy wins in her specialty, the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles.

Scherrman said Sanders is blessed with pure speed and is bound to get faster as she improves her technique.

“She’s very coachable,” he said. “She’s eager to learn, and she works very hard. It’s nice to think she’s only a sophomore.”

The young Warriors quartet has already qualified for the Drake Relays later this month in the 4x200. Under better weather conditions, Sanders thinks they have a shot at qualifying in other events, as well.

“We have a lot of talent,” she said. “I feel we have a chance this year, too.”
