Saints hold off Waterloo East, 64-54

WATERLOO - The Xavier Saints stopped the bleeding just in time Tuesday night and defeated Waterloo East, 64-54, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game in Waterloo.

The Saints led by 19 points early in the fourth quarter, but Waterloo East went on a torrid 16-0 run and pulled within three points to put the outcome in doubt. Matt Nelson made three big baskets for Xavier in the final minutes to help secure the victory.

Kevin Hosch collected a double-double for Xavier (8-12, 7-8) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ben McDermott scored 12 points, Mack Mattke contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, and Tanner Frazier scored 10 points as four Saints reached double figures. Trey Sampson dished out six assists.

Daeton Hoskins led Waterloo East (5-15, 2-13) with a game-high 18 points.

Xavier finishes the regular season at Dubuque Senior Thursday night.

XAVIER (64); Sampson 0 0-0 0, McDermott 5 0-1 12, Ropp 2 0-0 4, Frazier 3 2-2 10, Hosch 6 2-2 14, Valentine 1 0-0 2, Clasen 2 2-2 6, Mattke 4 2-3 10, Nelson 3 0-1 6. Totals 26 8-11 64.

WATERLOO EAST (54): Jones 2 0-0 4, Love 4 1-1 10, Hoskins 7 3-6 18, McGrane 3 1-2 7, VanArsdale 2 4-4 10, Robinson 2 1-2 5. Totals 20 10-15 54.
