Xavier - Boys Basketball

Aggressive Saints march past Warriors, 58-42

The Xavier Saints arrived in an ornery mood for their basketball game at Cedar Rapids Washington Tuesday night.

They vented their frustration on the winless Warriors.

The Saints attacked all night and belted Washington, 58-42, in a Mississippi Valley Conference blowout.

Xavier was drubbed in its last two games by Cedar Falls (71-40) and Western Dubuque (55-39) and thought it was time for someone else to suffer a stinging defeat.

"We kind of took Cedar Falls and Western Dubuque a little personal," said Kevin Hosch, who helped lead the charge Tuesday. "We wanted to take it out on Wash."

Xavier played an aggressive game, attacking the rim and turning turnovers into points. The Saints (3-7, 2-3) looked passive at times last Saturday night against Western Dubuque, but they turned that around against Washington.

"We got defensive stops that led to us getting out on fast breaks and easy buckets. Defense translates into offense," said point guard Ben McDermott.

"We just looked to push the ball. We score a lot more points when we do that. The shots were dropping tonight."

Xavier led 28-12 at halftime and raced to a 24-point cushion at 47-23 late in the third period. Time after time, the Saints got the ball and turned the game into a track meet. They didn't always convert, but they kept on attacking.

"We came in with the mindset that we want to run," said Hosch.

The Saints (3-7, 2-3) got a big boost from their reserves. Brian Ropp tossed in three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 13 points and fellow sub Tanner Frazier scored nine points, making them the top scorers for the visitors.

Alec Clasen, a 6-foot-3 jumping jack who is one of the top high jumpers in the state, also played well as a reserve. So did guard Trey Sampson.

"Phenomenal. They were phenomenal," said Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins, who loved the way his subs performed.

Jenkins was pleased overall with the way his club played on the road. The Saints missed 17 free throws, yet still won by 16 points.

"They played hard, they played together," he said. "It's something we haven't done for four quarters, is play consistently together on the offensive end and defensive end."

It was a different story for the struggling Warriors, who fell to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. They shot poorly and committed a string of turnovers, making it tough to get anything accomplished.

Sean Bredl led Washington with 12 points.

Jenkins feels he has the ingredients for a successful club at Xavier as the Saints head into the second half of the season.

"That's what we're hoping," he said. "As coaches, we're trying to find something that clicks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Tonight it did and we were able to come away with a win."

Xavier thumped by Western Dubuque, 55-39

Cameron James poured in 26 points Saturday night and T.L. Lake added 15 as the Western Dubuque Bobcats spanked Xavier, 55-39, in a non-conference basketball game at Xavier.

James and Lake combined for 41 points, outscoring the Saints all by themselves.

James, a 6-foot-4 senior, more than doubled his normal output of 12.4 points with a succession of field goals near the basket for Western Dubuque (7-2).

Mack Mattke led Xavier (2-7) with 11 points. The Saints trailed 29-21 at halftime, thanks in part to careless passes that led to easy Western Dubuque baskets.

Xavier scored only four points in the third quarter and trailed, 40-25, entering the final stanza.

No. 7 Cedar Falls races past Xavier boys

They opened with a pair of perfect plays.

Cedar Rapids Xavier worked the ball inside twice to sophomore center Matt Nelson, who made a pair of good moves, but failed to get short shots to fall.

Those two misses were all No. 7 Cedar Falls needed to get started.

Coach Tom Bardal’s Tigers jumped to a quick 7-0 start after Nelson’s near misses and were never headed in a 71-40 Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday night at the Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Cedar Falls (4-2 overall, 2-2 MVC) was so in control that its first turnover didn’t come until there was 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.

“They made everything,” said a disappointed Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins. “We didn’t play good defense and they did, just not a good showing on our part.”

The Tigers used an aggressive defense to push the Saints out of their offensive sets, then took advantage of their speed and quickness to find open shots.

Bardal was pleased with the patience shown by his team, especially in the third quarter when the Tigers put the game away.

“We played well,” he said. “I thought we shared the ball well and got out and ran.

“I thought we showed a lot of composure, especially late in the third quarter by going to the basket,” Bardal added. “I give Xavier credit for going to a triangle-and-two to try and speed us up, but I was pleased with the way we handled it.”

Jenkins admitted his team (2-6, 1-2) looked flat in its first game after the break, but added he thought the Saints would respond better.

“When you face a team like Cedar Falls you have to be ready because they are such a good team,” Jenkins said. “All across the board they’ve got athletic, skilled guys.

“We had our opportunities,” Jenkins continued. “We ran a couple nice plays to start the game, but we just couldn’t get the shots to drop. We got what we wanted, but when they didn’t fall, it looked like we accepted it a little bit.”

The Tigers used a balanced attack to gain the win. Slick point guard James Harrington led the way with 15 points. Tony Johnson (13), Isaac Boettger (11) and Caleb Konieczny (10) also reached double figures.

Mack Mattke was the lone Xavier player in double figures, finishing with 11.

The Saints return to action Saturday night with a non-conference match-up against Western Dubuque.

Saints pull away late, beat No. 3 Knights

The Xavier boys kept making runs, but they just couldn't shake Davenport Assumption.

The Saints would get a lead, the Knights would catch back up.

That was the way it went until about 4 1/2 minutes were left in Tuesday night's basketball game at Xavier.

But that's when senior Ben McDermott hit a 3-pointer with a hand in his face to give the Saints the lead for good. And then he added another 3.

“I just got open, got good passes ahead from teammates, and thought I’d shoot,” McDermott said.

McDermott, fellow senior Carter Valentine, and the rest of the Saints knocked down their free throws and a few easy layups to extend the lead and pull away from the Class 3A third-ranked Knights for a 63-52 win.

“We made plays down the stretch with big 3’s and free throws,” Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins said. “It put the pressure on them to score.”

The Saints jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first before the Knights went on an 8-2 run of their own to take the lead.

Assumption shot well against the Saints zone early going 7 for 11 in the first quarter to take a 16-13 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a battle of benches as the Saints sat four of five starters with foul trouble and the Knights sat their two leading scorers who were also in foul trouble.

The Saints' bench showed the team’s depth and solid defense as they were able to outscore the Knights 16-7 in the quarter.

“It shows we have good depth and can trust other guys to set up,” McDermott said of the second quarter.

Coach Jenkins was also pleased with his non-starters saying, “The bench did a great job defensively.”

The combination of a solid second quarter defense and five 3-pointers carried the Saints to a 29-23 halftime lead.

The Knights made a comeback again in the third quarter cutting the Saint lead to two going in to the final quarter.

Despite the comeback, the Knights ran into some problems. The Saints got Knight’s leading scorer Billy Daniel into foul trouble. He picked up his third an fourth fouls in the third quarter and fouled out early in the fourth with nine points.

“Anytime you can get an all state caliber player out of the game it gives you an advantage,” Jenkins said.

After Assumption tied the game at 39 McDermott hit the key 3-pointers and the Saints took control from the free throw line.

McDermott paced the Saints with 15, Valentine added 14. Knight’s senior guard Peter Finn led all scorers with 21.
