No.2 Saints survive J-Hawks, 62-61

Morgan Breitbach has some pretty good basketball bloodlines. And she’s a pretty good player in her own right. It showed Tuesday night.

The junior Xavier point guard made key plays and led her No.2-ranked 4A team to a gritty 62-61 come-from-behind Mississippi Valley Conference win at the Jefferson J-Hawk gym.

The Saints moved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the MVC, while Jefferson dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Breitbach scored 12 points and had four assists, including a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left that sealed the win.

Xavier girls stopped by Hempstead

The IGHSAU rankings came out this week and in Class 4A the top two teams on the charts were Harlan and Cedar Rapids Xavier, perhaps thinking about a potential rematch of the state finals from a year ago.

There is a lot of time before the postseason begins and though Xavier fans certainly remember last year’s classic in Des Moines, it was time Friday night to have a regular-season encounter between the Saints and the Hempstead Mustangs.

Hempstead came to town and left with a 38-31 victory after holding the Saints to just seven points in the first half.

City High gives Saints tough lesson

Xavier Coach Tom Lilly likes to play Class 5A Mississippi Valley schools because he thinks it toughens his team up for the Class 4A state tournament.

He got what he wished for Friday night in the Saints' home opener when Class 5A No. 2 Iowa City High came calling and walked away with a 68-49 win over the Class 4A No.3 Saints.

Considering that the Little Hawks (4-0, 2-0 MVC) had beaten their first three foes by an average of 50 points, it might even be said that Xavier (3-1, 1-1) held them in check.
