Saints stay 3rd, Cougars 9th in poll

The Xavier Saints, who are off to a 3-0 start with three straight road victories, stayed in the No.3 spot in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings Thursday by the IGHSAU.

The Kennedy Cougars (2-0) remained in the No.9 spot in the Class 5A rankings. The Washington Warriors (0-1) fell out of the Class 5A poll after being ranked No.10.

Dowling Catholic is ranked No.1 in Class 5A and Harlan is ranked No.1 in Class 4A. The other top-ranked teams are MOC-Floyd Valley in 3A, Western Christian in 2A and Newell-Fonda in 1A.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

No.3 Xavier girls bury Waterloo East

WATERLOO - The Xavier Saints zoomed to a 45-2 lead by halftime Tuesday and crushed Waterloo East, 57-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Waterloo.

Hayley Deutmeyer led the Saints (3-0, 1-0) with 22 points and five rebounds.

Lizzy Bailey finished with 11 points and four steals. Morgan Breitbach had five assists and four steals. Maddie Bertsch also collected five assists and four steals.

Xavier is ranked No.3 in Class 4A. Waterloo East, a Class 5A school, fell to 0-3.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

No.3 Saints trip Johnston in OT

JOHNSTON - Morgan Breitbach hit six straight free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime Saturday night to help the Xavier Saints clip Johnston, 48-44, at Johnston.

The Saints, ranked No.3 in Class 4A, have taken two long trips this season and have won them both. Saturday's victory came on the heels of a successful journey to Decorah Tuesday.

Johnston (1-1) hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the Saints answered the challenge and outscored the Dragons 12-8 in the extra session.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

Saints top Decorah in season opener

DECORAH - The fourth-ranked Xavier Saints girls basketball team defeated
Decorah, 55-39, in the season opener Tuesday night in Decorah.

Hayley Deutmeyer and Lizzy Bailey led the 2013 Class 4A state champions
with 11 points apiece.

The Saints outscored Decorah at the foul line, 29-7.

XAVIER (55): Breitbach 2 2-2 6, Deutmeyer 1 9-12 11, Christianson 1 4-9 5,
Dickes 0 3-4 3, Watson 3 3-3 9, Bertsch 4 0-0 8, Bailey 2 7-11 11,

Saints, Cougars, Warriors crack rankings

Xavier, Kennedy and Washington have made the rankings in the first IGHSAU basketball poll of the season.

The Saints, who won the Class 4A state title last year, are ranked No.3 in the initial poll this season.

The Cougars are ranked No.9 in Class 5A and the Warriors are ranked No.10 in Class 5A.
