Saints surge past Linn-Mar girls

Try as she might, Linn-Mar’s Mykaela Brandt could not beat the Xavier girls Friday.

She came close, single-handedly bringing her team back from a runaway to within three points late in the third quarter.

But then the music died for the visiting Lions.

The Saints marched off a 20-2 run over a seven-minute period, waltzing down the stretch to a 52-37 victory.

Saints back up to 6th in girls poll

Xavier inched up two spots to No.6 in the Class 4A basketball poll released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier has been ranked as high as No.4 during the season, but slipped to eighth in last week's poll.  The Saints moved up after beating Kennedy and Dubuque Wahlert last week.

Washington held onto its No.8 ranking in Class 5A.

Ankeny replaced Mason City atop the Class 5A poll. The Mohawks dropped to second.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

Stulken helps Saints top Wahlert

DUBUQUE - Ashley Stulken scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Friday night as the Xavier Saints defeated Dubuque Wahlert, 52-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Dubuque.

McKenna Anderson scored 11 points for Xavier (8-6, 6-2) and Hayley Deutmeyer netted 10.

Ana Schmitt led Wahlert (3-8) with nine points.

Xavier girls stick it to Kennedy

With a lineup full of new players, wily Xavier girls basketball coach Tom Lilly is going back to some old ways that worked in the past.

“We learn from former players who come back and ask about some ins and outs we used to use,” Lilly said Tuesday night after his novice Saints patiently used an old-school inside/outside game to turn back the visitors from Kennedy, 60-51.

Since senior starting guard Kayla Armstrong is the only player on the roster who had extensive court time last year, Lilly runs fresh legs in and out like a traffic cop.

Xavier girls nudged by Valley, 66-64

WEST DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints put up a good fight on the road Saturday before falling to West Des Moines Valley, 66-64, in a girls basketball game.

Hayley Deutmeyer led the Saints (6-6) with 17 points. Kayla Armstrong had 12 points and five steals. Ashley Stulken scored 11 points and Maddie Bertsch had 10.

Xavier led, 50-46, after three quarters. The Saints were outscored 20-14 in the final stanza.

XAVIER (64): Armstrong 5 1-2 12, Breitbach 0 0-0 0, Deutmeyer 6 3-4 17, S.Dickes 1 0-0 3, J.Dickes 0 2-2 2, Watson 0 0-0 0, Bertsch 3 4-7 10, Bailey 0 1-1 1, Andersen 3 1-2 8, Chorzempa 0 0-0 0, Stulken 4 3-6 11. Totals 22 15-24 64.
