Murderers Row ends with another loss

No one could have blamed No. 14 Xavier for wishing for a little breather in its schedule after the Saints lost three consecutive heartbreakers to ranked teams in the last two weeks, dropping games to No. 3 Iowa City West, No. 4 Waterloo West and No. 11 Dowling Catholic by a combined eight points.

Instead, the road only got steeper on Friday night as the Saints played No. 2 Linn-Mar on its home court, losing 50-31 to the Metro’s top team.

Xavier girls fall to another ranked foe

A possible concussion. A sprained finger. Another painful loss.

That was the story Thursday for the 14th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team, which lost a tight game to a ranked opponent for the third time in six days.

Iowa City West clinched the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 49-45 victory over the 14th-ranked Saints at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Streaking Wahawks hold off Saints

Among Metro teams and fans, No. 6 Waterloo West may be best known as the only team that has managed to tame the mighty Linn-Mar Lions.

Tuesday night, the Wahawks took down another top Metro team, defeating No. 11 Xavier 32-29 after a fierce, evenly played defensive skirmish in which turnovers were more numerous than baskets. In the end, Waterloo senior leader Jadyn Spencer won the game at the free throw line.

For Xavier (12-5, 8-4), it was a missed opportunity to topple a streaking team.

Late 3 dooms Saints girls

Junior Maddie Bosworth capped off Dowling’s fourth quarter comeback by banking in a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds to play giving West Des Moines Dowling a 38-37 win over Xavier in a battle of ranked teams Saturday afternoon at Xavier High School.

No. 11 Xavier (12-4) had a last chance to win, but a long pass after multiple time outs was intercepted and No. 13 Dowling (13-2) had the win.

“I knew we had to make a big play and I was ready,” Bosworth said. “It felt good on the release, I was confident it was going in.”
