Xavier girls crush Waterloo East, 82-21

The Class 4A seventh-ranked Xavier girls basketball team wasted little time in beating up on winless Waterloo East, topping the Trojans 82-21 Friday at Xavier.

Xavier led 22-2 after the first quarter.

Lizzy Bailey scored 12 points as 14 Saints scored. Madi Nelson and Meghan Joens each added 10 points.

Xavier improved to 15-6, while Waterloo East fell to 0-21.

Sharma helps Lions stifle Saints

Linn-Mar senior Niki Sharma is the kind of basketball player every good team needs.

“She does all those things that don’t show up on the stat sheet,” said her coach Jaime (Printy) Brandt Tuesday night after the resurgent Lions (14-7) smothered Xavier, 42-24, on the Saints' home floor.

A lithe and nimble 5-foot-11 forward, Sharma looks to others first, passes with precision, handles the ball easily and guards tenaciously. She’s also like a ringmaster on the court, directing traffic and shouting encouragement.

"Nikita’s the glue that holds everything together out there,” Brandt said.

Xavier girls clobber Waterloo West

WATERLOO – The seventh-ranked Xavier girls basketball team made short work of Waterloo West, beating the Wahawks 65-29 Friday.

Lizzy Bailey scored 18 points for the Saints (14-5), who jumped to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter. Morgan Breitbach added 11 points. Waterloo West fell to 3-14.
