Xavier girls climb to 7th in 4A

The Xavier girls basketball team continued its climb in the Class 4A rankings by jumping from No. 9 to No. 7, the IGHSAU announced Thursday.

The Saints have compiled a 13-5 record, primarily against Class 5A competition.

The Marion Indians (16-4) remained 13th in the Class 4A poll. The Kennedy Cougars (13-5) stayed No. 8 in the 5A rankings.

The top-ranked teams are Waukee in 5A, Harlan in 4A, Mediapolis in 3A, Unity Christian in 2A and Burlington Notre Dame in 1A.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

Breitbach wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier senior Morgan Breitbach is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Breitbach, a 5-foot-7 guard, is a key member of the Xavier basketball team that is ranked No. 9 in Class 4A and enjoying a fine season with a 13-5 record. The Saints have won three straight games, including key victories over Linn-Mar and Washington.

Breitbach helps Xavier in a variety of ways. She scored 23 points against Dubuque Senior, collected seven assists against Dubuque Wahlert, made six steals against Decorah, and had six rebounds in three different games.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

Xavier girls ignite late against Wash

The Class 4A ninth-ranked Xavier girls basketball team outscored Washington 25-6 in the fourth quarter and beat the Warriors 66-50 Friday at Xavier.

Washington led 34-24 at halftime thanks to a 21-10 second quarter, but scored the Warriors scored just 16 points in the second half.

Lizzy Bailey scored 16 points for Xavier (14-5). McKenna Andersen added 12 points and Lexi Noonan chipped in 10.

Kandis O’Donnell scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Washington (10-7).

Hempstead girls handle Prairie 51-37

DUBUQUE – The Prairie girls basketball fell to 2-14 with a 51-37 loss to Dubuque Hempstead on Tuesday at Hempstead.

The Prairie Hawks trailed 22-17 at halftime, and the Mustangs pulled away with a 20-10 run in the third quarter.

Olivia Usher scored nine points for Prairie and Emily Rotter added eight.

Gabrielle Riley scored 19 points for Dubuque Hempstead (6-10).

Xavier girls belt Waterloo East, 82-20

WATERLOO - Lizzy Bailey scored 15 points Friday night as the Xavier Saints cruised to an 82-20 victory over winless Waterloo East in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Waterloo.

Erin Drahazol contributed 13 points and McKenna Andersen netted 10 for the Saints, who raised their record to 11-5 with the easy victory.

Xavier is ranked 11th in Class 4A. Waterloo East fell to 0-15.
