Roth lifts Lions; Saints rip J-Hawks

Jimmy Roth noticed the lightning in the distance when he came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied, the bases loaded and two outs Monday night.

The slender senior seized the moment and produced a little lightning of his own.

Roth's single to left field lifted Linn-Mar by Prairie, 4-3, in the opening round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the new Linn-Mar field.

"It was a really big win against a very good team," said Roth, who looped an 0-2 pitch to the opposite field for the game-winner. "It was just a great game to win, especially at the new complex. It's a confidence booster."

The game probably would have been suspended if Roth hadn't gotten his clutch hit, because the lightning strikes were about 10 miles away and headed toward the field.

"That was going to be the last at-bat, probably," said Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner. "It saved a lot of headaches for planning and scheduling for everybody. I'm glad we were able to get it in."

Xavier mauled Jefferson, 12-1, in the first game Monday as Corbin Woods went 3-for-4 with a double and two home runs, including the first homer at the new park. Mitch Keller pitched a strong game for the Saints, allowing three hits in six innings with eight strikeouts.

The Des Moines Register reported Sunday night that Sweeney, a former Cedar Rapids Xavier prep, is being called up by the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Cubs website said that move is expected to be announced Monday.

“It’s a good feeling,” Sweeney told the Register. “I put in some hard work down here, and hopefully I’ll get up there and transfer it over.”

Saints have solid ballclub for 2013

Xavier is looking to pick up the pace and be a bit more aggressive this season, and with four of its top five pitchers returning and a junior group to provide some much needed speed it looks as though the Saints are ready to take off.

The Saints lost only three players from their 21-15 team of 2012. Gone are all-around standout Mack Mattke’s .383 hitting and 3-3 pitching record, Tyler Hines’ 2-2 record and solid second baseman Mitch St. Andrews, who contributed a .341 average.

Their leadership will have to be picked up by the returning nucleus.

Keller accepts offer from No.1 Tar Heels

Mitch Keller was sitting in the baseball office at the University of North Carolina this past December when Coach Mike Fox offered him a spot on the team.

You could have knocked the Xavier High School junior over with a changeup.

"Wow!," Keller said Wednesday. "That was the first thought that came into my head when I was sitting in there.

"Wow, I'll actually have a chance to play here. It felt so right. Everything is awesome."
