Schemmel still going strong with Saints

Dave Schemmel turned 60 in June and admits he doesn't have as much zip on his fastball in batting practice anymore, but he still loves putting on the uniform and going to the ballpark with the Xavier Saints.

His next stop will be Principal Park in Des Moines, where the Saints (25-15) will face Sioux City East (30-9) in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Schemmel has compiled a 526-361 record in 26 years as the head coach at Xavier (15 years), Regis (10 years) and LaSalle (one year), making him a member of the exclusive 500 Win Club in state history.

Keller's clout sends Xavier to state

Mitch Keller was exhausted after throwing 121 pitches Wednesday night in the Class 4A substate finals, but he wasn't too tired to hit one of the most dramatic home runs in school history to earn the Xavier Saints a trip to the state tournament.

Keller belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the 10th-ranked Saints a tense 8-5 victory over Prairie in a classic three-hour battle at Ken Charipar Field.

Xavier (25-15) will face Sioux City East (30-9) in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Xavier needed a four-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning to break away from Waterloo East for an 8-3 victory at Ken Charipar Field.

Waterloo East entered the game with an ugly 2-36 record, but the Trojans gave the Saints all they could handle.
