Brecht headed to LIU for baseball

Xavier High School graduate Colby Brecht has accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Brecht, a catcher, hit .284 with 18 RBIs at Southeastern Community College this season as a sophomore.

Cedar Rapids Prairie graduate Dustin Carlson, a relief pitcher at Southeastern this season, also has accepted a scholarship from LIU.

Clinton snaps Saints' streak at 5

CLINTON - Xavier had its five-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night by Clinton, 8-3, in a non-conference basll game.

Adam Pick was 2-for-3  with a double for Xavier (14-9).

Schulte helps Saints with his arm

Reggie Schulte used his brains and talented right arm to help the Xavier Saints reach the championship game of the Class 4A football playoffs last fall as their star quarterback.

Tuesday night, Schulte used his same attributes on the mound to help the Saints defeat Bettendorf, 8-3, at Ken Charipar Field.

Xavier (14-8) has come out of its funk and has begun to put things together with five straight victories. The formula for success has been timely hitting, good pitching and defense.

Saints fall to 9th in 4A baseball poll

The Xavier Saints dropped five spots to No.9 this week in the Class 4A baseball poll, conducted by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The Saints (13-8) have won four straight games, but had lost eight of 14 games prior to turning it around.

The Prairie Hawks, who have the best record in the Metro at 16-6, are not ranked. Prairie leads the Valley Division in the MVC with an 11-3 mark and is three games ahead of Xavier in the Valley standings.

Revived Saints pound Hempstead twice

The Xavier Saints looked like they might contend for the state baseball title this year when they ran away with the Metro Tournament last month, but they went into a batting slump and disappeared for a few weeks.

"We're back," senior Zach Brown announced happily Monday night.

The Saints pounded Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Ken Charipar Field, 11-1 and 11-0, with both games lasting only five innings due to the mercy rule.
