No.8 Saints blank Cedar Falls, 14-0

Xavier quarterback Quinton Scholer limped around school all week with a sore ankle. Then he helped the Saints limp past Cedar Falls Friday night.

Scholer made two key plays and the eighth-ranked Saints pitched their fifth shutout of the season with a gritty 14-0 victory over the Tigers at Saints Field.

Xavier (7-1) scored twice in the fourth quarter, first on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Scholer to Matt Nelson and then on a 62-yard punt return by Wes Gardner.

There was no scoring in the defensive slugfest for 40 minutes, and then the Saints scored twice in 64 seconds to whip Cedar Falls for the third straight time.

Saints tamed Cedar Falls twice in 2012

The Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints had never defeated the Cedar Falls Tigers at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls before last season. Then they did it twice in one year.

First in the regular season, 24-7. Then in the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs, 27-6.

They were breakthrough victories.

"For that group last year, it certainly was," said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte. "I don't know if it matters to this group, because each year is different."

The eighth-ranked Saints (6-1) host Cedar Falls (5-2) Friday night. As far as Schulte is concerned, last year's games are dead and buried.

"I hope these guys, at the snap of the ball, are not thinking about last year," he said. "They better be thinking about what they have to do in the next two seconds.

"It doesn't matter what they did last year. It's what you do now," he said. "But for last year, we wanted to win those games. And thank God we did."

WATERLOO - Cedar Rapids Xavier bounced back.

Waterloo West deflated, and in a hurry.

In other words, the Saints and Wahawks veered in very different directions Friday night at Waterloo Memorial Stadium.
