Warriors stun No.1 Saints, 26-10

Paul James quit coaching once. The way things are going now, it might be a long, long time before he ever quits again.

James and the amazing Washington Warriors tore the top-ranked Xavier Saints to shreds Friday night with a stunning 26-10 victory that was equal parts coaching genius and equal parts a phenomenal performance by the guys in red, white and blue.

The Saints and their homecoming crowd left the stadium with the same thought: Who were those guys?

No.1 Saints blank Cougars again, 24-0

The stingy top-ranked Saints blanked Kennedy for the third straight year Friday night, 24-0, for their sixth straight regular-season victory over the Cougars since 2008.

Xavier (5-0) held Kennedy (3-2) to just 76 yards of total offense. The Cougars punted the ball 10 times out of 11 possessions, collected only four first downs and crossed midfield only once.

No.1 Saints playing air-tight defense

Xavier High School coaches and players give the same stock answer when you ask about their incredible defensive performances this year.

"We're doing OK" ... "We could do better" ... "There's room for improvement."

If that's true - if the top-ranked Saints can play even better than this on defense - then opponents might not score another point against them all season.

Saints stay No.1 in Register rankings

The Xavier Saints continued to sit in the No.1 spot in the Class 4A football rankings Sunday, the Des Moines Register announced.

The Saints (4-0) cruised to a 38-0 victory against Dubuque Wahlert at Loras College in Dubuque Friday night. Xavier plays Kennedy (3-1) this Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

The Cedar Falls Tigers, ranked No.2 last week, dropped out of the poll after losing to Waterloo West, 17-16.
