No.1 Saints stuff J-Hawks, 44-0

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.1 in the state by the Des Moines Register, the Associated Press and The Gazette, but that can't be right.

Surely the Northern Iowa Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones and Coe Kohawks are better than the Saints.

But if you're looking for the No.1 high school football team in the state, you won't get any arguments from Jefferson Coach Brian Webb.

"I haven't seen the teams on the west side (of the state), but I don't know who's better than this team on the east side," Webb said Friday night. "Xavier is where we want to be."

The Saints rolled to a 37-0 lead at halftime and smashed the J-Hawks, 44-0, on Senior Night at the Xavier field.

'Big brother' helped Scholer with Saints

New Cedar Rapids Xavier High School quarterback Quinton Scholer had a "big brother" on the football team the past 12 months or so, but they were not actually related by birth or family ties.

Scholer's "big brother" was Reggie Schulte, the all-state quarterback who led the Saints to the Class 4A championship game last year before leaving this summer for his new duties at the University of Northern Iowa.

Xavier has a "Big Brother/Little Brother" program, where older players adopt a younger player at their position and show them the ropes. Scholer had Schulte as his big brother and is mighty glad he did.

Scholer, a 6-foot-3 senior, looked good in his debut as top-ranked Xavier's new starting quarterback in a 35-7 victory at Dubuque Hempstead last Friday. He completed 8 of 10 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball eight times for 99 yards and two more TDs.

Scholer's relationship with Schulte began last season, when Scholer was the No.2 quarterback for the Mississippi Valley Conference champs. It continued during the winter, spring and into the summer until Schulte left for Cedar Falls.

Sharp Scholer leads Saints to win

DUBUQUE – In searing humidity on Opening Night of a season of great expectations and state championship predictions, Quinton Scholer looked like the most comfortable prep football player in the state of Iowa on Friday night. He couldn’t have been more relaxed if he was snoozing in a hammock on a Saturday afternoon.

If Scholer was feeling any pressure in his first start since taking the reins of the Cedar Rapids Xavier offense from graduated all-stater Reggie Schulte, he wasn’t showing it. Iceland isn’t this cool.

A razor-sharp Scholer drove the Saints offense like a smooth-running Mercedes and the Saints returned to the gridiron with a rousing, telling reminder of why coaches from Sioux City to Muscatine have pegged them as Iowa’s 4A team to beat in 2013.

Scholer, who made more interceptions playing defensive back last year (three) than he had pass attempts as Schulte’s backup, made himself completely at home behind center.

Scholer passed for 112 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 99 yards and two scores as Xavier opened with a business-like 35-7 punch-out of a green Dubuque Hempstead team at Dubuque’s snazzy new $9 million Dalzell Field.

Successful Saints love their football

Duane Schulte called the Xavier football team together for the start of practice Wednesday and led the team as it jogged from the school to the practice field.

They kept coming and coming and coming.

There are 86 players on the varsity this year, the most since the high school opened for business in 1998. There are another 79 players on the sophomore and freshman teams, making for a total of 165 guys in the Xavier football program.
