Saints hope state titles run in the family

Craig Murtha, Paul Cavin and Nick Drahozal sat in the stands in the UNI-Dome the last time the Xavier Saints played for the Class 4A football title, proudly watching their older brothers.

Daniel Vega was a little luckier than the others. He was on the sidelines that night as one of Xavier's waterboys while his brother wore the school colors.

The year was 2006 and they were in grade school when the Saints and their older brothers beat Southeast Polk, 21-6, for the state crown.

This Friday night the four "kid" brothers will get to play for a state championship of their own. This time, their older brothers will be watching them.

Get Xavier football tickets at school

Xavier football fans can purchase tickets to Friday night's Class 4A state championship game at the school this week.

Tickets cost $8 and will be sold at the Xavier Activities Office from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday.

Xavier plays Ankeny in the state finals Friday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m.

The tickets can only be used for the 4A title game and cannot be used for the 1A and 2A games that will be played prior to the 4A game.

Xavier is the "home" team and its fans will sit on the east side of the UNI-Dome.

Xavier's waterboy in 2006 is all grown up

CEDAR FALLS - Reggie Schulte was a waterboy the last time the Xavier Saints played for the Class 4A state title.

He'll have a slightly more important job this time.

Schulte was in the sixth grade when the Saints won the state crown in 2006. His father is Xavier's head coach, and there are always a lot of little Saints helping on the sideline.

"I still remember it, to be honest with you," Schulte said moments after Xavier defeated Cedar Falls, 27-6, in the semifinals Friday night.

Xavier stuffs Cedar Falls in semifinals, 27-6

CEDAR FALLS - Duane Schulte and the Xavier Saints have won 99 football games since the school opened 15 years ago on the northeast side of Cedar Rapids.

If they win their 100th game next Friday, they'll be the Class 4A state champions for the second time in six years.

The third-ranked Saints used big plays and a smothering defense to subdue No. 7 Cedar Falls, 27-6, Friday night before more than 2,000 of their loyal fans who made the trip to the UNI-Dome.

Xavier (13-0) will try to play giant-killer when it faces top-ranked Ankeny (13-0) for the state title in the UNI-Dome next Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m.

These Xavier gridders have spotless 30-0 record

Daniel Vega, Sean Ickes and Logan Clarahan have never lost a football game during their entire Xavier High School careers.

Never. Ever.

Their freshman team compiled a perfect 9-0 record in 2010.

Their sophomore team finished with an unblemished 9-0 mark in 2011.

Now that they've reached the varsity as juniors, the Saints have a glittering 12-0 record heading into the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs against Cedar Falls Friday at 7:06 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
