It's OK to peek: Saints eye Tigers

The Xavier Saints don't have to avoid the urge to peek ahead anymore.

The big game is finally here.

The fourth-ranked Saints will face the second-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Friday night at 7:30.

Both clubs are 7-0. Both clubs are aiming for the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division title. And both clubs are gunning for high seeds in the Class 4A playoffs.

Xavier runs past Waterloo West, 49-14

The Xavier Saints continued their undefeated season by downing Waterloo West, 49-14, in a homecoming victory Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game.

Reggie Schulte threw three touchdown passes and Nick Steingreaber ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns, one on a kickoff return, to lead Xavier.

The fourth-ranked Saints (7-0, 4-0) got off to a shaky start, however, before buckling down.

Saints stay 4th in Register football poll

The Xavier Saints remained in fourth place in the Class 4A football rankings in the Des Moines Register Sunday following their 35-13 victory over Washington Thursday night.

Ankeny topped the rankings, followed by three straight teams from the Mississippi Valley Conference with No. 2 Cedar Falls, No. 3 Iowa City West and No. 4 Xavier.

The Saints host Waterloo West this Friday for homecoming, then visit Cedar Fals Oct. 12 in the UNI-Dome before finishing the regular season against Linn-Mar Oct. 19 at home.

Decorah is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A again.

Nelson helps No. 4 Saints top Warriors, 35-13

Matt Nelson towered over everybody else at Kingston Stadium Thursday night.

Literally and figuratively.

The 6-foot-8 junior caught two touchdown passes and excelled on defense as No. 4 Xavier escaped upset-minded Washington, 35-13, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Helms is center of strength for Saints

Xavier senior Ben Helms has taken plenty of hits. After all, he’s the starting center on the Saints’ undefeated football team, and he makes it his business to protect home plate as a catcher on the Xavier baseball team.

But his harshest blow came in an encounter with a serious – and initially mysterious – digestive illness that landed him in the University of Iowa Hospital for 10 days last year. He’ll deal with the condition for the rest of his life.

Helms’ ordeal began during the summer between his sophomore and junior years. “I had bad stomach cramps and was getting really weak and tired,” he recalls. After basic lab tests failed to reveal anything abnormal, he decided he must be suffering from a nasty case of stomach flu.
