Schulte, Woods set records as Saints roll

Reggie Schulte began asking his father to diagram football plays for him when he was in the fifth grade and a ballboy for the Xavier Saints.

He learned his lessons well.

Schulte tossed four touchdown passes Friday night as No. 4 Xavier blanked Kennedy, 35-0, in a 42nd Street mismatch at the Saints Field.

Schulte tied school records for most touchdown passes in a single game (4) and most touchdowns passes in a season (18) and expanded his own school mark for most TD strikes in a career (30).

Corbin Woods, his lifelong pal, caught two touchdown passes against the winless Cougars to give him 12 in his career, putting his name in the Xavier record book as well.

No. 4 Saints expect test from Cougars

The Xavier Saints have cruised to four straight victories this season and have walloped their opponents by a combined score of 198-35.

Coach Duane Schulte isn't sure if he wants a tough game to challenge his team or not, but he's convinced he's going to get one from Kennedy.

"I think we're going to be tested this Friday night," he said. "Kennedy is a good football team. They're big and fast."

On paper, it's a mismatch. The Saints have won four straight and are ranked No.4 in Class 4A by the Des Moines Register. The Cougars have lost four straight and have had problems scoring.

Miller scoots for 236 as No. 6 Saints roll

On a night when his mentor Tom Kopatich and the 1982 state champion LaSalle football team were being honored, Xavier Coach Duane Schulte had a flashback Friday to another great team 14 years later.

The 1996 Lancers, who were 9-0 and made it to the state quarterfinals, were led by small and shifty scatback Jess Miller.

His equally speedy nephew Brendan, on his first run from scrimmage in his first varsity start on the first Saints possession Friday night, scampered 64 yards untouched for a touchdown.
