Ramlo's goal lifts Saints to state title

DES MOINES - Connor Ramlo picked the perfect time to score his first state tournament goal.

The Cedar Rapids Xavier sophomore tapped the ball past the Storm Lake goalie in the 77th minute of the Class 2A championship match Saturday at Cownie Soccer Park. The goal broke a 1-1 tie and pushed the Saints past the Tornadoes for the Class 2A title, their third in four seasons.

“We had a good shot at scoring and I knew we needed one then just to get the win,” Ramlo said. “I was just there to put a touch on it and it snuck past the keeper.”

Following a scoreless first half, Xavier (14-5) took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when senior Eli Smith scored. With time running out, Storm Lake (15-2) used a goal by Peter Mulgae in the 71st minute as an equalizer when he pushed the ball past keeper Paul Cavin following an initial kick off the goalpost.

Frisch boots Saints into state finals

DES MOINES - Isaac Frisch kept his promise Friday.

As a result, the Xavier Saints will be gunning for their third state title in four years Saturday in the Class 2A state soccer tournament at Cownie Park.

Frisch blasted in the game-winning goal with 5 minutes, 36 seconds left in the second overtime Friday as the Saints rallied to trim Pella, 2-1, in a semifinal thriller.

Frisch was exhausted, but he delivered.

"He promised a goal. And when he scored I couldn't believe it," exclaimed Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic, relieved with the victory.

Xavier (13-5) will face Storm Lake (15-1) for the title on Saturday at 2:35 p.m.

Saints hold off Wahlert at state soccer

DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints won state soccer titles in 2010 and 2011, but they fell short last year and saw their rivals from Dubuque Wahlert walk away with top honors.

The Saints did something about it Thursday.

Xavier built a 3-0 lead against Wahlert and escaped with a 3-2 victory in the opening round of the Class 2A tournament at the Cownie Soccer Park on a soggy, gray day in Des Moines.

Xavier beats weather, CCA for state berth

Not even Mother Nature could knock the Xavier boys soccer team off its game in Saturday’s Class 2A substate final.

“Our goal every game was to come out and get the early goal, because that  really boosts our confidence,” senior co-captain Eli Smith said after Xavier’s 5-0 home win over Clear Creek-Amana.

Playing on a sodden pitch under a steady rain that intensified in the second half, Xavier got that goal in just the third minute as co-captain Isaac Frisch converted on Smith’s assist.
