Xavier - Girls Soccer

Xavier girls soccer ranked 17th in U.S.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named Cedar Rapids Xavier High School the 17th-ranked girls soccer team in the United States for the 2013 spring season.

The Saints won their eighth straight state title in June, capturing the Class 2A title. They lost only one game all season.

Armstrong named Metro's top player

Kayla Armstrong added another honor to her growing list Tuesday.

Armstrong was named the Metro Player of the Year by the local coaches. She already has been named first team all-state, the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division Player of the Year, and captain of the Class 2A all-tournament team.

Armstrong was joined by Xavier teammates Sammi Shepard and Monica Busse on the all-Metro first team.

Xavier - Girls Soccer

Seven Metro athletes all-state in girls soccer

Seven Metro athletes have been named first team all-state in girls soccer by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

There were two athletes each from Kennedy and Linn-Mar, and three from Xavier.

Kaela Dickerman and Tory Harman of Kennedy, Jensen Sevening and Olivia Garcia of Linn-Mar were named to the Class 3A first team.

Kayla Armstrong, Sammi Shepard and Sarah Chicchelly were named to the Class 2A first team.

Xavier - Girls Soccer

Armstrong, Harman top MVC soccer athletes

A pair of Metro athletes earned Athlete of the Year honors in girls soccer in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Kayla Armstrong of Xavier was top athlete in the Valley Division and Tory Harman of Kennedy earned the same honor in the Mississippi Division.

Armstrong led Xavier to its eighth straight state title. Harman's Kennedy team finished one game away from a state berth.

Xavier - Girls Soccer

Dorrington made smooth transition at Xavier

DES MOINES - Some young coaches may have shied away from accepting the challenge of coaching the Xavier High School girls soccer team this season.

Bailey Dorrington embraced it.

Dorrington, 24, starred on state championship teams at Xavier in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and was named to the all-tournament team four straight years, capped by serving as captain as a senior.

She returned to Xavier last year as an assistant coach and helped the Saints nab another title, then willingly succeeded Doug Graham as head coach this season despite the "pressure" of trying to win an eighth title in a row.
