Armstrong's goals carry Saints past City High

IOWA CITY - Kayla Armstrong scored two first-half goals that carried No.1 Xavier past Iowa City High, 2-1, Thursday in Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer.

Armstrong scored her first goal on a penalty kick with 24:41 left in the first half. Her second goal came with 17:37 left in the half.

City High scored its goal in the first half.

Xavier keeper Sara Chicchelly had four saves.

Xavier stays No.1 in girls soccer

The Xavier Saints kept their No.1 spot in the Class 2A girls soccer rankings Thursday with a 1-0 record.

Kennedy (1-2) dropped from No.2 to No.5 in Class 3A. Linn-Mar (1-0) stayed No.7 in Class 3A.

Armstrong leads No.1 Saints to victory

DUBUQUE - Kayla Armstrong scored two goals Monday as the top-ranked Xavier Saints opened their season with a 2-0 victory over Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference match in Dubuque.

Sara Chicchelly made three saves for the shutout. Marisa Berutti had an assist.

Armstrong scored her first goal with 32:20 remaining in the first half. She clinched the victory with another goal with 4:51 left in the game.

Dorrington era begins for Xavier soccer

With a major milestone behind them, the Xavier girls soccer team began a fresh era Tuesday under a new coach but lots of veteran players.

First-year coach Bailey Dorrington, 24, is hardly a stranger to the program since she was an assistant last year and a four-year starter for the Saints before graduating in 2007.

In her freshman year, Xavier won its first state championship. Following a runner-up finish in 2005, it reeled off seven straight titles over the next seven years.

Saints No.1, Cougars No.2 in soccer poll

The Xavier Saints and Kennedy Cougars, who won girls state soccer titles last year, are considered two of the top teams in the state again this season.

Xavier was ranked No.1 in Class 2A in the IGHSAU preseason ratings that were released Monday.

Kennedy is ranked No.2 in Class 3A, one notch behind Bettendorf. The Linn-Mar Lions are ranked No.7 in Class 3A.
