No. 7 Saints sweep Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Erin Drahozal and Kylie Oldridge pitched strong games Thursday as the seventh-ranked Xavier Saints swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Dubuque Hempstead in Dubuque.

Drahozal tossed a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as Xavier captured the first game, 8-0.

Oldridge pitched a complete game in the nightcap with three strikouts in a 5-2 victory as the Saints raised their record to 6-0.

Kailee Becker went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the first game. Morgan Breitbach hit a home run.

Breitbach socked another homer in the second game. Freshman Cassie Himmelsbach hit her first career home run for Xavier.

 

Xavier - Softball

No. 7 Saints sweep Wahlert

The No. 7 Xavier softball team swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Dubuque Wahlert Thursday at Xavier.

The Saints won both games in identical fashion, 11-1 in five innings.

Morgan Breitbach was 2-for-3 with a home run in the first game. Jamie Feltes was 2-for-2 with a double. Allison Schwach scored three runs.

Erin Drahozal pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Breitbach went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the second game. Courtney Colston was 2-for-3. Kylie Oldridge tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

3 Metro teams make softball rankings

Jefferson, Xavier and Prairie have been ranked by the IGHSAU in the first girls softball polls of the season.

The J-Hawks are ranked No.5 in Class 5A, the Saints are ranked No.7 in Class 4A and the Hawks are ranked No.9 in Class 5A.

Jefferson (33-12) and Prairie (29-16) made the state tournament in 2013. Prairie reached the state tournament for the first time in school history in 2013.

Johnston is ranked No.1 in Class 5A and and Dallas Center-Grimes is No.1 in Class 4A.

Winter, Utley honored by IIAC

Two former Metro athletes have been honored by the Iowa Conference this week.

Xavier grad Kristen Winter, now a junior at Luther College, has been named the IIAC softball player of the week.

Prairie grad D.J. Utley, now a junior at Wartburg, has been honored by the conference in baseball.

Winter, a second baseman, hit .500 and slugged 1.100 while leading the Norse to the Iowa Conference tournament title. She had three hits and three RBIs, including a walk-off home run, in Luther's 5-4, 8-inning win over Buena Vista Friday. She had two hits, including a two-run homer, in a 15-11 Norse championship game win over Coe Sunday.

Utley, a first baseman, hit .571 (8-of-14) with three doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored. In the regular-season finale against Central, he tied a career-high with five RBIs and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Utley also started the finale on the mound, throwing two innings.

Drahozal, Galligan named softball all-state

Eight players from Metro area high schools have been named to the 2013 all-state softball teams, the Iowa Girls Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Maddie Hansen, Alyssa Olson, Kaitlyn Davidson and Dani Stromert from Cedar Rapids Jefferson made the Class 5A all-state team.

Mallory Jones and Katie Kuch of Cedar Rapids Prairie also made the Class 5A all-state team.

Erin Drahozal and Sydney Galligan of Xavier were named to the Class 4A all-state team.
