Saints claim 1st MVC softball crown

There have been many titles won in girls athletics since Cedar Rapids Xavier opened in 1998.

One of the few missing crowns was a Mississippi Valley Conference divisional title in softball. That was crossed off the list Monday night.

The Saints got the sweep they needed to secure the Valley Division championship, downing Cedar Rapids Washington, 15-6 and 7-1, on the Washington diamond.

Xavier, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, finishes regular-season play at  28-11 overall, 20-6 in the league. Cedar Rapids Prairie, which swept its twinbill against Dubuque Hempstead, finished a game back at 19-7. Washington, which opens Class 5A tournament play Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, fell to 14-24, 7-19.

No.7 Saints eye MVC softball title

It was Senior Night for the Xavier softball team Tuesday night and the Saints gave themselves a nice present by sweeping Cedar Falls, 5-4 and 10-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

Xavier raised its record in the Valley Division of the MVC to 18-6, giving itself a one-game lead over Prairie with two games left in the season. If the Saints sweep Washington on Monday, they'll be the outright Valley Division champs.

Xavier seniors Erica Miller, Sydney Galligan, Jenna Schulte and Jacey Wiebold figured heavily into the success.

The Saints and their fans broke out in song, singing "Happy Birthday" to Xavier Coach Nikki Price.

Ironically, Price and her team got more than their share of gifts from the Lions during the games. Linn-Mar committed seven errors in the two games and a pop fly that dropped for a hit on what would have been the final out, led to a nine-run first-inning explosion the propelled the Saints to a 13-1 win in three innings in Game 1.

The nightcap was much more competitive, but two crucial errors led to three Xavier runs as the Saints won, 5-2.
