Schuler, Warriors pin Xavier

You don't have to be a big, muscular guy to enjoy high school sports. Just take a look at Trey Schuler, all 103 pounds of him.

Schuler, a freshman at Washington High School, played football this fall for the Warriors and plans to participate in track and baseball as the year goes along. Right now, he packs a punch for the Warriors at the lightest weight on the wrestling team.

Schuler pinned Jerry Duball of Xavier in 4:48 Thursday night to help Washington beat the Saints, 42-27, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Washington.

Schuler, now 10-2 for the season, was somewhat disappointed with the outcome of his match. "I felt like I should have pinned him quicker," he said.

Schuler used to weigh 116 pounds, but cut 13 pounds and has wrestled at 103 all season. There's a two-pound allowance now, so he can eat a little more and compete at 105.

Losing 13 pounds was not easy. "The first week I didn't feel very well," he said.

Now it's the other guys who don't feel very well after they wrestle against Schuler. He had enough points for a technical fall when he finally pinned Duball.

"He's good, man. He's a tough kid," said Washington Coach Matt Hatcher. "He's been wrestling for awhile, so he had a lot of good skills before he came in."

Schuler began wrestling in the first grade and was a five-time state qualifier on the junior AAU circuit.

"I love it," he said. "Just you and that other guy out on the mat. It's just you and him, to see who's better."

Hatcher thinks Schuler can qualify for the state tournament and succeed in Des Moines next month.

"Potential-wise, he's good enough to get on that (awards) stand this year," said Hatcher. "And if you're ever good enough to get on the stand, you're good enough to win it.

"He's a very tough kid, very good attitude, hard-nosed, competitive," said Hatcher. "It's what we want in wrestlers."

Washington (4-8, 2-5) won eight of 14 matches against Xavier (5-11, 0-7). Kaiser Herz (140), Tyler Burkle (145) and Drake Hickok (160) had pins.
Jordin Eicher (125) and Evan Lehrman (152) won close decisions, while Matt Salazar (112) and Tyle Burrell (285) won by forfeit.

Jack Boland (189) collected a pin for the Saints, Peter Ickes (171) notched a technical fall and Braxton Chicchelly (130) had a major decision. Nick Drahozal (119) and Tyler Laska (135) won decisions, with Laska winning on a takedown at the buzzer. Jarad Barak (215) won by forfeit.
