Warriors flexing muscles in 4A football

The top-ranked Washington Warriors have been winning football games this season with a strong running attack and stingy defense.

Wsahington (6-0) ranks second in Class 4A in rushing offense at 274.3 yards per game and ranks fourth in Class 4A in scoring defense at 9.8 points per game.

Keagan Pinter of Prairie leads all Metro rushers with 815 yards on 115 carries. Tavian Patrick of Washington is second in Metro rushing with 615 yards, but has had only 54 carries. Pinter ranks fifth in Class 4A rushing in the state.

Linn-Mar quarterback Ryan Schmidt is tied for fourth in Class 4A scoring with 11 touchdowns for 66 points. Gunner Lenzen of Washington is tied for first in Class 4A with 29 PAT's.

JoJo Simpson of Prairie leads all Class 4A punters with a 41.7-yard average on 18 punts.

Saints drop to 5th in football poll

The Xavier Saints fell from No. 1 to No. 5 in the Class 3A football rankings by the Des Moines Register Sunday.

The Saints lost to Western Dubuque, 7-6, Friday night at home.

Pella has moved into the No. 1 spot in the 3A poll. Western Dubuque raised its overall record to 4-2, the same as Xavier, but the Bobcats are not ranked.

The Washington Warriors remained in their perch at the top of the Class 4A rankings with their 40-2 conquest of Ottumwa. Linn-Mar is ranked ninth after beating Kennedy, 29-14.

Borschel picked for IHSAA Hall of Fame

Former Linn-Mar wrestling star Jay Borschel will be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.

Borschel is a member of an exclusive Hall of Fame class that features four wrestlers who were four-time state champs.

Mack Reiter of Gilbertville Don Bosco, C.J. Ettelson of Hudson, Daniel LeClerc of North Linn and Borschel were all four-time champs.

Former Davenport Assumption wrestling Coach Wade King also will be inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame. King spent two years as the wrestling coach at Cedar Rapids Washington and is still the football coach/athletic director at Assumption.

Borschel finished his prep career with 163-1 record from 2002 through 2005. He won state titles at 103 pounds, 125, 152 and 171.

Borschel was an NCAA champion at 174 pounds for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2010. He is currently an assistant coach at Northwestern University.

Patrick leads Pinter in Metro rushing

Washington tailback Tavian Patrick has jumped to the top of the Metro rushing derby with his 212-yard outburst against Muscatine last Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

Patrick has carried the ball 48 times for 589 yards in five games for a remarkable average of 12.27 yards per carry. He has a slight lead over Prairie tailback Keagan Pinter, who has rushed 84 times for 584 yards.

Jefferson quarterback Jesse Furrow leads the Metro in passing. He has completed 40 of 70 passes (57.1 percent) for 832 yards. Furrow has thrown nine touchdown passes in five games with only two interceptions.

Linn-Mar quarterback Ryan Schmidt and Xavier quarterback Bryce Schulte are locked in a tight battle for the Metro scoring lead. Schmidt has run for 10 touchdowns and 60 points, while Schulte has scored nine touchdowns for 54 points.

Pinter leads Kortemeyer in Metro rushing

Cedar Rapids Prairie tailback Keagan Pinter has taken a slight lead over Jay Kortemeyer of Xavier as the leading rusher among the eight Metro football teams.

Pinter has rushed for 437 yards in four games for the Hawks this season, compared to 427 yards in four games for Kortemeyer.

Prairie has the leading rusher, leading passer and leading receiver so far this season. Trey Beckman has thrown for 780 yards and Jalen Rima has 19 catches for 270 yards.

Linn-Mar quarterback Ryan Schmidt and Xavier quarterback Bryce Schulte are tied for the Metro scoring lead with seven touchdowns for 42 points.
