Gase makes Sprint Cup debut Sunday

Joey Gase of Cedar Rapids will make his debut in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series this Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway.

Gase, 21, graduated from Xavier High School in 2011. He will be driving the No. 32 car for Go FAS Racing.

Indians, Lions climb in volleyball poll

Two of the top volleyball teams in the state are located in Marion, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Marion Indians climbed one spot to No.3 in the Class 4A rankings Thursday and the Linn-Mar Lions climbed two spots to No.7 in the Class 5A poll.

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.11 in Class 4A, down one spot from the initial rankings. The Kennedy Cougars jumped into the rankings at No.10 in Class 5A.

Ryan Sweeney placed on 60-day DL

CHICAGO - Chicago Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney has been transferred to the 60-day Disabled List and is finished for the 2014 season, media outlets in Chicago have reported.

Sweeney had been on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury.

Sweeney, 29, from Cedar Rapids, hit .251 with three home runs and 20 RBIs this season. This was his eighth year in the Major Leagues and he has one year remaining on a two-year contract he signed with the Cubs before the 2014 season.

Saints stay No.1 in 3A rankings

The Xavier Saints remained in the No.1 spot in the Class 3A football poll Sunday in the Des Moines Register despite losing to Dowling Catholic, 24-2, Friday night in the season opener.

Dowling is ranked No.1 in Class 4A. Friday's game was a rematch of the 2013 Class 4A state championship game, but Xavier dropped form 4A to 3A this year and has only four returning starters.

The Washington Warriors stayed in the No.3 spot in the Class 4A rankings after topping Jefferson, 43-26, Friday.

Jenks places 18th at World Triathlon

EDMONTON, Canada - Linn-Mar High school junior Stephanie Jenks finished 18th out of 54 contestants at the ITU Junior World Triathlon in Edmonton Friday.

Jenks was timed in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 42 seconds.

Laura Lindemann of Germany won the grueling event in 1:02.35.
