Kamin, Bertsch, Winter top all-Metro golf

MJ Kamin of Washington, Maddie Bertsch of Xavier and Grace Winker of Xavier are unanimous selections on the 2014 All-Metro girls golf team.

Emily Machula of Prairie, Teresa Lopez Moreno of Linn-Mar and Lauren Coughlin of Linn-Mar also were first-team selections.

Bertsch and Winker led Xavier to the Class 4A state title this season. Bertsch was the state medalist and Winker the runner-up.

Kamin placed second at the Class 5A state meet.

Julie Kadlec of Xavier and Bill Hoefle of Linn-Mar were the Co-Coaches of the Year.

KCC's Sneed picked for all-star games

Ariel Sneed of Kirkwood Community College has been selected to play in the 2014 NJCAA Women's Basketball All-Star Games in Niceville, Fla., July 24-27.

Sneed, a 6-foot post player, was named a third team All-American this season after averaging 10.8 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Eagles. She will be a sophomore at Kirkwood next season.

Forty players have been selected for the all-star games, which will be played at Northwest Florida State College.

Metro Players in Pro Baseball

The Metro Sports Report provides a daily update on all Metro graduates who are playing pro baseball this year.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF: Sweeney was activated from the Disabled List Friday and went 0-for-4 for the Cubs in his first game in six weeks. He is hitting .186 (11 for 59) with 6 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers): Schebler went 3-for-4 Friday with a home run and 2 RBIs. He is hitting .265 (63 for 238) with 12 homers and 36 RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays): Sweeney was released by the Toronto Blue Jays organization Wednesday. He was hitting .222 (8 for 36) with four doubles and an RBI.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins): Christensen went 0-for-5 Friday with an RBI. He is hitting .286 (66 for 231) with 5 homers, 36 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.

JON KELLER (Xavier), Delmarva, P, Class A, South Atlantic League (Orioles): Keller (2-0, 1.50, 2 saves) did not pitch Friday. He has 47 strikeouts in 36 innings this season.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar), Bowling Green, P, Class A, Midwest League (Tampa Bay): Hanse (0-3, 6.84 ERA) did not pitch Friday.

DAKOTA FREESE (Washington), Arizona Athletics, P, Rookie Arizona League (Oakland): Freese is recovering from an injury and probably will not pitch again until the fall.

6 Metro players make all-tourney

DES MOINES - Six players from Metro teams were named to the all-tournament squads at the state soccer meet Tuesday.

Gunnar Lenzen and Jacob Bjornsen of Washington made the Class 3A all-tournament team, along with Blake Comstock and Ben Johnson of Linn-Mar.

Jerry Duball and Connor Ramlo were named to the Class 2A all-tournament team.

Washington topped Linn-Mar, 2-1, in a PK Shootout in the Class 3A consolation match for third place. The Warriors scored on an "own goal" during regulation and Leroy Enzugusi scored for Linn-Mar.

Xavier lost to Waverly-Shell Rock, 4-2, in the Class 2A consolation game for third place. Spencer Duball and Jacob Walvoord scored for the Saints.

Prospect Meadows gets $1.3 million grant

PERRY - The commission for the Iowa Department of Transportation on Tuesday unanimously approved Linn County’s application for a Revitalizing Iowa’s Sound Economy (RISE) grant, which will be given to Prospect Meadows.

The total RISE application was for just under $2.6 million, half of which is paid for by the state, the other half paid for by Prospect Meadows. This grant will fund the building of two entrances to Prospect Meadows Ball Fields on the north side of Marion as well as an interior road connecting the two entrances to each other as well as the parking lot of the facility.

The purpose of the RISE program is to promote economic development in Iowa through the establishment, construction, improvement and maintenance of roads and streets to sites that promote economic development in the state by improving or maintaining highway access to these sites.
