No Metro baseball teams make rankings

None of the Metro baseball teams are ranked in the first poll of the season by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Des Moines East is ranked No.1 in Class 4A. The Mississippi Valley Conference is represented by Iowa City West in the No.2 spot in the 4A poll and Cedar Falls in the No.9 spot.

Sioux City Heelan is ranked No.1 in Class 3A. The Xavier Saints are a Class 3A school this year, but they did not make the poll.

Schebler homers in 2 straight games

The Metro Sports Report provides a daily update for all the Metro graduates who are playing pro baseball this season.

Here is the full report through Saturday, May 31:

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF: Sweeney is on the 15-Day Disabled List with a strained hamstring in his right leg. He is hitting .200 (11 for 55) with 6 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers): Schebler went 2-for-4 Saturday with a solo home run and scored two runs. He also hit a home run on Friday. He is hitting .240 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays): Sweeney did not play Saturday. He is hitting .083 (2 for 24) with two doubles and two runs scored.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins): Christensen went 2-for-4 Saturday with a double and run scored. He is hitting .290 with 3 homers, 22 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.

JON KELLER (Xavier), Delmarva, P, Class A, South Atlantic League (Orioles): Keller (2-0, 1.80, 2 saves) enjoyed another strong outing Saturday. He pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, two walks and one hit. He has struck out 39 batters in 30 innings and allowed only 17 hits.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar), Bowling Green, P, Class A, Midwest League (Tampa Bay): Hanse (0-3, 7.13 ERA) has been placed on the 7-day disabled list.

DAKOTA FREESE (Washington), Arizona Athletics, P, Rookie Arizona League (Oakland): The Arizona Athletics have not begun their season. The Arizona Rookie League begins June 20.

Metro baseball tourney starts Monday

The annual Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament will begin Monday on Memorial Day with the first two rounds at the Xavier and Jefferson high school diamonds.

The final round will be played Tuesday, with the championship game at Veterans Memorial Stadium at approximately 7 p.m.

The opening-round games at Xavier have Kennedy playing Mount Vernon at 10 a.m. and Prairie facing Xavier at noon. The first-round losers meet at 2 p.m. and the first-round winners meet at 4 p.m.

The opening-round games at Jefferson have Linn-Mar facing Washington at 10 a.m. and Marion meeting Jefferson at noon. The losers play at 2 p.m. and the winners play at 4 p.m.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF: Sweeney has been on the 15-Day Disabled List with a strained hamstring in his right leg since May 3. He is hitting .200 (11 for 55) with 6 RBIs. Sweeney went 0-for-2 with a walk in a rehab assignment with Kane County against the Kernels Monday night.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers): Schebler went 0-for-4 Monday. He is hitting .257 (58 for 226) with 11 homers and 33 RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays) : Sweeney did not play Monday. He is hitting .222 (8 for 36) with four doubles and an RBI.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins): Christensen went 0-for-3 Monday with an RBI, walk and stolen base. He is hitting .292 (63-216) with 5 homers, 31 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

JON KELLER (Xavier), Delmarva, P, Class A, South Atlantic League (Orioles): Keller (2-0, 1.64, 2 saves) did not pitch Monday.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar), Bowling Green, P, Class A, Midwest League (Tampa Bay): Hanse (0-3, 7.13 ERA) is on the 7-Day Disabled List.

DAKOTA FREESE (Washington), Arizona Athletics, P, Rookie Arizona League (Oakland): Freese is recovering from an injury and probably will not pitch again until the fall.

Kellen Sweeney activated by Dunedin

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Kellen Sweeney will finally get a chance to play some baseball this season.

Sweeney, 22, was activated Monday by the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Class A Florida State League after spending the entire season on the Disabled List so far with an undisclosed injury.

Sweeney, an infielder, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2010 draft following his graduation from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School.

Sweeney has a career batting average of .198 in four seasons in the low minors with 11 home runs and 81 RBIs in 244 games.
