Metro Players in Pro Baseball

The Metro Sports Report is providing a daily update for all the Metro players in pro baseball again this season.

Here is the report through Wednesday, April 9.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF: Sweeney did not play Wednesday as the Cubs defeated Pittsburgh, 5-3, at Wrigley Field. He is 2-for-17 with a .118 batting average.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers): Schebler went 1-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base as the Lookouts lost at Tennessee, 3-1, Wednesday. He is hitting .227 (5 for 22) with a double, triple, home run and five RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays): Sweeney is on the 7-Day Disabled List and has not played this season.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins): Christensen went 1-for-4 Wednesday as the Kernels defeated Great Lakes, 5-3. He is hitting .200 (3 for 15) with one run scored.

JON KELLER (Xavier), Delmarva, P, Class A, South Atlantic League (Orioles): Keller (0-0, 2.25 ERA) allowed one run on one hit in two innings as Delmarva defeated Hagerstown, 5-3, Wednesday. He struck out two batters and walked two. He has six strikeouts in four innings this year.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar), Bowling Green, P, Class A, Midwest League (Tampa Bay): Hanse (0-0, 0.00) did not pitch Wednesday as Bowling Green lost at Burlington, 5-2. He has struck out four batters, not walked anyone and allowed only one hit in three innings this season.

DAKOTA FREESE (Washington), Arizona Athletics, P, Rookie Arizona League (Oakland): The Arizona Athletics have not begun their season.

Here is the report through Monday, April 7:

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF: Sweeney has gotten off to a slow start. He is 1-for-13 for a .077 batting average after four games. He has one RBI, three strikeouts and no walks. The Cubs were idle Monday.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers): Schebler is hitting .222 after four games. He is 4-for-18 with a double, triple, home run and four RBIs. He went 0-for-3 in a 4-0 loss to Jackson Monday.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays): Sweeney is currently on the 7-Day Disabled List and has not played this season.

Hayden named ICCAC Pitcher of Week

Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad Alex Hayden has been named the Pitcher of the Week by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference in Division II.

Hayden, a sophomore at Iowa Central, pitched a one-hit shutout Sunday as the 17th-ranked Tritons blanked NIACC, 10-0, in five innnings.

Hayden has a 5-1 record and 3.34 ERA this season and is tied for the most victories in the ICCAC. He has struck out 19 batters and walked only two in 32.1 innings.

Sher joins heavenly writing team now

Tom Fruehling called a little more than three years ago with news that a talented writer and editor was interested in joining the Metro Sports Report staff.

Tom, one of the original members of our cast, has an eye for talent, but admitted this friend of his had never been a sportswriter, was not familiar with nightly deadlines and had never dealt with sometimes cranky coaches before.

You might want to give her a chance, he suggested. She's really smart, a terrific writer and has a tremendous knack of getting people to talk openly for her stories.

Her name was Sher Jasperse, and as usual Tom knew exactly what he was talking about.

Sher, our friend and colleague, died Thursday at age 59, a victim of a devastating illness that destroyed her health but never took away her mind and great spirit. A writer to the very end of her days on earth, she even wrote part of her own obituary.
