Franklin named Athlete of Year in Metro

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Dani Franklin has been honored as the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro girls basketball team.

Frank Howell of Washington was named the Coach of the Year.

Franklin, Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Katie Sommer of Linn-Mar were unanimous selection on the first team. Cyerra Hutchins of Prairie, Morgan Martin of Kennedy, Aleena Hobbs of Washington and Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier joined them on the top unit.

Indoor facility keeps Lewis in the game

John Lewis learned how to catch fly balls when he was a budding young baseball player by racing after golf balls people would hit to him.

You probably won't get those kind of lessons from Lewis at the Line Drive Hitting complex in Swisher, but the former Kirkwood Community College baseball coach will be happy to teach you just about everything he knows about the grand old game.

Individuals and teams can practice on their own in the facility, which has six cages of various sizes, including a 70-foot cage that's suitable for pitching as well as hitting.

Cougars, Lions draw byes in tourney

The Kennedy Cougars and Linn-Mar Lions have drawn byes in the opening round of the Class 4A boys substate basketball tournament and will have to win only two games to reach the state tournament in Des Moines, but it's certainly no cakewalk.

Kennedy might have to knock off fourth-ranked North Scott to make the state tournament and Linn-Mar might have to upset No.1 Dubuque Senior to get there.

The Class 4A substate and Class 3A district pairings were announced Wednesday by the IHSAA, and all of the Metro teams could face stiff battles.

Eastern Iowa All-Star Games at Kirkwood

The annual Eastern Iowa All-Star basketball games will be held at Kirkwood Community College on Wednesday, March 26.

Matt Nelson of Xavier High School and the Sommer twins from Linn-Mar - Katie and Kristie - have committed to play, according to event director Jamie Johnson.

Wyatt Lohaus of Iowa City West and Kyle Haber of Dubuque Senior also have committed to the event. Additional invitations have been extended to players in the area.

There will be separate girls and boys games, a three-point shootout and a dunk contest.

Kellen Sweeney got tips from Carew

Kellen Sweeney does not feel like a .198 hitter in the low minors, but that’s where he stands after four years with the Toronto Blue Jays.

He hopes some batting tips from Hall of Famer Rod Carew will help jump-start his career.

Ryan Sweeney, Kellen’s older brother who plays for the Chicago Cubs, took lessons from Carew last winter and it helped his power numbers during the 2013  campaign. Kellen followed Ryan’s advice and spent several days with Carew in California this winter.
