Metro teams face stiff postseason odds

Kennedy, Xavier and Linn-Mar have emerged as the best boys basketball teams in the Metro area this season, but all three of them probably will have to upset a ranked team to reach the state tournament in Des Moines.

Kennedy has been placed in a Class 4A substate with third-ranked North Scott, Xavier finds itself in a Class 3A substate with third-ranked Dubuque Wahlert and Linn-Mar has been assigned to a Class 4A substate with top-ranked Dubuque Senior.

The postseason assignments were announced Monday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. First-round pairings and seedings will be announced in February.

Xavier football is top story of 2013

The Xavier Saints reached the championship game of the Class 4A football playoffs for the second year in a row this season, then a month later the school declared it would stop playing in the Mississippi Valley Conference next year and compete at the Class 3A level instead.

Xavier's march to the Class 4A finals and its subsequent decision to stop playing MVC football after 16 years is this observer's choice as the No.1 story in the Metro area this year.

The Saints will be going from Class 4A underdogs to Class 3A behemoths, ushering in a new era for the school and the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Bettendorf seeded No.1 for 5 Seasons duals

The top-ranked Bettendorf Bulldogs have been seeded No.1 and lead a strong field for the 2013 Five Seasons Wrestling Dual Team Tournament this Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

The tournament will be held at the Washington and Kennedy high school gyms, with the championship round scheduled for Washington at approximately 4 p.m.

There are seven ranked teams in the 16-team field, including five of the top-10 teams in Class 3A with No.1 Bettendorf, No.4 Linn-Mar, No.5 Prairie, No.6 Mason City and No.8 Iowa City West. West Delaware is ranked No.5 in Class 2A and Alburnett is ranked No.1 in Class 1A.

Van Oort leads Metro volleyball team

Mary Kay Van Oort has been named the Coach of the Year on the 2013 All-Metro Volleyball Team.

Kayla Torson of Xavier, Abby Phillips of Marion, Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Kiley Coppock of Linn-Mar were unanimous selections to the first team.

Dani Franklin of Washington, Meghan Busswitz of Prairie, Madi Meier of Kennedy and Anna Fluent of Kennedy also were named first team All-Metro.

Schools raise $1,899 for Salvation Army

The eight schools that are participating in the Metro Sports Report Classic raised $1,899.76 as Bell-Ringers for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle fundraising drive this month.

The Jefferson J-Hawks led all the schools with $471.20 in donations during their six-hour shift on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee.

The Metro Sports Report Classic is a Pride Challenge event, as sanctioned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Each Pride Challenge event carries a community service component and the MSR Classic is working with the Salvation Army as it celebrates its 125th anniversary in Cedar Rapids.

All eight schools also will be donating presents for children associated with the Salvation Army to enjoy at the holidays.
