J-Hawks top Indians in girls jamboree

As part of a full night of season-opening exhibition games Friday in the Kennedy Jamboree, the Jefferson girls may have set a dubious record.

In their abbreviated 16-minute 34-28 win over Marion, the J-Hawks committed 18 fouls with 11 of them coming in the first quarter.

One of their players, Kieley Brathwaite, even managed to foul out despite a format in which coaches used their whole roster to get the kinks out.

“Obviously, we have to quit fouling so much,” said Jefferson Coach Jason Edwards. “The girls got a little too itchy and a little too grabby out there tonight.”

Schools selling tickets for MSR Classic

Tickets are now on sale for the Metro Sports Report Classic basketball event that will be held at Kirkwood Community College on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Tickets will be sold this week (Monday, Nov. 18 through Friday, Nov. 22) at Jefferson, Kennedy, Washington, Xavier, Marion and Prairie. Please contact the Activities Office at each school.

Tickets will be sold at Cedar Valley Christian this Friday, Nov. 22 during a school assembly at 2 p.m.

Tickets also will be sold at Prairie on Monday, Nov. 25 during the lunch period.

Tickets will be sold at Linn-Mar on Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Sayers will juggle at MSR Classic

Doug Sayers, one of the top jugglers in the world, will perform two shows at the Metro Sports Report Classic basketball event on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Kirkwood Community College.

Sayers, 25, has won numerous world titles and was named the Overall Champion at the World Juggling Federation Convention in 2010. He won the Individual World Championship title in 2009.

Sayers grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Kennedy High School. He has performed locally on many occasions and is always a big hit at Cedar Rapids Kernels games.

3 CRSA teams win state soccer titles

DES MOINES - Three teams from the Cedar Rapids Soccer Association won titles at the Iowa State Cup this fall at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

The state crowns were captured by the U-18 Boys, U-16 Boys and U-16 Girls. The events were held Oct. 19-20, Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 2-3.

The CRSA teams featured numerous players from Metro high schools.

Snitker tops All-Metro football team

Reid Snitker of Cedar Rapids Washington has been named the Player of the Year on the 2013 All-Metro football team.

Snitker led the Warriors to their big upset of then-No.1 Xavier with his passing and running as the Washington quarterback. The Warriors finished 6-4 this season after an 0-3 start.

Paul James of Washington was named the Coach of the Year, along with his assistants.

The Xavier Saints led the All-Metro squad with six first-team selections with Matt Nelson, Daniel Vega, Sean Ickes, Logan Clarahan, Miles Sullivan and Ryan Persick.
