Drake tops all-Metro swim team

Cedar Rapids Jefferson freshman Kelsey Drake has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2013 All-Metro Swimming and Diving Team.

Drake placed second in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly at the state meet in Marshalltown Saturday.

Kennedy led the All-Metro squad with seven first-team selections with Maddie Bagby, Hannah Botkin, Katie Ferguson, Sam Jacobsen, Kirsten Siebenga, Brooke Timmerman and Michele Wasta.

The Linn-Mar Lions had five first-pick picks with Alyssa Deuso, Samantha Fitzgerald, Jenn Jenks, Stephanie Jenks and Mikaela Lengwin.

MSR Classic teams helping Salvation Army

Basketball players and cheerleaders from all eight Metro high schools will be serving as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army Red Kettle holiday fundraising campaign this Saturday, Nov. 16 at various locations in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

The activity is part of the Metro Sports Report Classic, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood campus and showcases all eight Metro boys basketball teams.

The Metro Sports Report Classic is part of the Hall of Pride Challenge, which features a combination of basketball events and community service projects. The Salvation Army is celetrating its 125th anniversary in Cedar Rapids in 2013 and is working with the Metro Sports Report on the MSR Classic.

The basketball players and cheerleaders will serve as bell-ringers from noon until 6 p.m. this Saturday in the Metro area.

Tickets now on sale for MSR Classic

Tickets are now on sale for the Metro Sports Report Classic basketball event that will be held at Kirkwood Community College on Saturday, Nov. 30.

This unique event will feature all of the boys basketball teams from all eight Metro schools in a series of Hall of Pride Challenge scrimmages.

There will be two doubleheaders at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood Community College campus in southwest Cedar Rapids.

Football prevues - Nov. 8

Forty-second Street has been a one-way road the last three times Xavier and Kennedy have met on the gridiron.

Xavier has owned the Cougars, winning all three games by a combined score of 87-0. That includes a 24-0 victory on Sept. 27 at Kingston Stadium.

The teams meet again Friday night in a Class 4A quarterfinal playoff game at Saints Field.

MSR Classic just 4 weeks away

The countdown has begun for a special day of high school basketball in the Metro community.

The first Metro Sports Report Classic, presented by Play It Again Sports Cedar Rapids, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood Community College campus in southwest Cedar Rapids.

All eight boys basketball teams from the Metro area will be playing in the Classic, making this the first time that all eight schools will be playing in the same event on the same day in the same gym.
