Tiffels' goal lifts RoughRiders to OT win

RoughRiders forward Judd Peterson has ESP. Or, at least, ESPN.

He correctly predicted that Cedar Rapids would beat Indiana. The RoughRiders won 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.

And his pal, Frederick Tiffels, scored the game-winner with 42 seconds left in overtime.

"I told him before we went out for the third period ... he was getting frustrated ... the amount of shots he was getting and he wasn't scoring," Peterson said of Tiffels. "I looked at him and said, 'you're going to get the game-winning goal.'

"It just happened to be that way."

Peterson came up with the game-tying goal midway through the third period to force overtime, and then Tiffels responded with the game-winner against the  Eastern Conference leaders in front of a season-best 3,746 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

"It's huge," Tiffels said. "It's a big win for us."

Tiffels is from Germany, and has now played three games with the RoughRiders (20-14-1). He also had the assist on Peterson's goal.

"He's fitting in with all the guys," Peterson said of Tiffels. "All the guys love him. He had a huge night."

The win halted a six-game winning streak for Indiana (23-6-6) but it still got one point in the standings for the overtime loss. The Ice are five points ahead of Dubuque (47) and 11 up on Cedar Rapids and Green Bay in the Eastern Conference.

"We're not going to make a big deal out of any one game," Cedar Rapids Coach Mark Carlson said. "They are a good club. We don't talk about (playoffs and positioning). We stick to our plan of one game at a time."

Carlson was impressed with the way his team rallied. Indiana scored late in the second period on a 2-on-1 breakaway, with Jason Salvaggio earning the goal.

With Cedar Rapids seemingly unable to skate past the Indiana defense, and 0-for-4 on power plays on the game, that one goal held up for a long time.

"They played a really weird trap," Peterson said. "They just liked to dump pucks in and bang bodies.

"Once you get around them, your chances come."

Indiana outshot Cedar Rapids 28 to 18 in regulation, but the RoughRiders won the 5-minute overtime, outshooting the Ice 7 to 2.

"I thought we got after it pretty good," Carlson said. "We hung in there, and were able to find a way."

RoughRider goalie Chris Birdsall survived a few odd-man rushes by the Ice in the extra period before C.R. was finally able to counter.

Birdsall had 29 saves in the win.

"We did well defensively," Birdsall said. "We all back-checked very well. The last man got the job done."

The win helped ease the 6-1 loss at Dubuque on Friday.

"Every facet was better today," Tiffels said. "Everyone was a part of the win."

It also gives the RoughRiders momentum for a Wednesday home date against Des Moines (14-18-3).

"The guys know, if they put their minds to it, and put in the work, they can win on any given night," Carlson said.

"I can't even tell you where we are in our division," Peterson said. "But every win is huge. Especially after last night didn't go the way we wanted to.

"We shook last night off, came back, and got the win tonight."

Just as he predicted.
