Lions, J-Hawks eye state track titles

The Linn-Mar Lions and Jefferson J-Hawks have the talent to win multiple titles at the Class 4A girls state track meet in Des Moines this coming.

Now here's the big question: Do they have enough talent to win the team championship when everyone gathers at Drake Stadium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday?

The Lions feature a superstar in Stephanie Jenks, one of the premier distance runners in state history and a threat to capture the 800, 1500 and 3000 in Des Moines. She's heavily favored (and nearly untouchable) in the 1500 and 3000 and awfully good in the 800 as well.

The J-Hawks take a tremendous amount of pride in their relay units and rightfully so.

Let the races begin.

Jenks is seeded No.1 in the 800 and 1500, based on her times at the state qualifying meet this past Thursday. She's seeded only 11th in the 3000, but don't pay any attention to that. Jenks did what she had to do qualify in

the 3000 and showed at the Drake Relays last month that she's running in a world of her own this year in the 3000.

The Lions are also seeded No.1 in the 4x400 relay. Amber Decker is seeded No.2 in the 800 and No.5 in the 400, giving her a chance to pile up some

points for the team. Rachel Perry is seeded No.8 in the 400 and Lannie Nietert is No.9 in the shot put, and points from them could be prove extremely valuable in the team standings for Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar is ranked No.5 in the sprint medley and No.9 in the distance medley.

The Lions qualified for the state meet in 15 of 19 events, giving them broad representation. The J-Hawks qualified in 11 events, which means they'll have to make the most of their opportunities to keep up with their Mississippi Valley Conference rivals. Jefferson is seeded No.1 in the sprint medley and 4x200 relay. They are

No.2 in the 4x100 relay and shuttle hurdle relay, and Madison Ranschau is seeded No.2 in the 100 hurdles. The J-Hawks could pile up the points in those events. In addition, Lucy Schneekloth is seeded No.5 in the 200, Jasmine Blue is No.6 in the 100 and the 4x400 relay is No.8.

The Prairie Hawks have enjoyed a successful season with several titles at major meets this spring. Halle Lueck is seeded No.4 in the long jump, Kenzie Soeken is No.5 in the high jump and Hailee Montgomery is No.9 in the 100 hurdles. Prairie is also seeded No.4 in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Kennedy features Alyssa Averhoff in the 3000 (seeded No.4) and Amarri Waller in the 100 (seeded No.9).

The Washington Warriors have a pair of talented relay teams in the 4x100 and distance medley, both seeded No.7. Kadejah Sanders is seeded 10th in the 100.

Molly Breitback of Xavier is seeded No.7 in the 100 in Class 3A.
