Metro football stars make an all-star team

I'd like to put a fantasy football team together of the Metro high school stars who plan to play football in college next season.

I bet I'd win a few games with these guys.

Let's put Jesse Furrow of Jefferson at quarterback, with Keagan Pinter of Prairie and Perrion Scott of Linn-Mar as the running backs. We'll put Landen Akers of Washington and Logan Nelsen of Linn-Mar at wide receiver, with JoJo Simpson of Prairie at tight end.

Now comes the really juicy part with the offensive line. We'll put Bryce Meeker of Prairie (6-5, 300) and Julian Good-Jones of Washington (6-5, 275) at the tackles, Royal Silver of Washington (6-3, 275) and Dalton Kuehl of Jefferson (6-6, 249) at guard, and insert Tim Otting of Xavier (6-4, 230) at center.

A few of those guys would be playing out of position, but they're all terrific athletes and could handle the switch.

Sam Drysdale of Prairie is the place-kicker and Simpson is the punter.

The defense would start with the incomparable Connor Vincent of Washington at middle linebacker. We'll put Michael Maher of Xavier on the defensive line and fill out the rest of the squad with many of the same guys from the offensive unit.

I like my odds.

Furrow (Wheaton College) has a rocket arm. He had only modest stats in his only year at Jefferson after moving here from Indiana, but look for him to flourish in college. Wheaton got a steal.

Pinter (Upper Iowa) ran for 1,103 yards and 11 touchdowns for Prairie last season. Scott (Iowa Central) is a burner who broke loose for 985 yards and nine TDs.

Akers (Iowa State) was a jack-of-all trades for Washington on its path to the Class 4A finals as a receiver, defensive back and kick returner. Nelsen (St. Cloud State) starred for Linn-Mar on defense, but he'd be fine at receiver.

Simpson (Upper Iowa) made a name for himself at defensive end, but he also did a good job as a running back and would be a natural at tight end.

My offensive line is big and mobile with Meeker (Iowa State), Good-Jones (Iowa State), Silver (Iowa Western), Kuehl (Coe) and Otting (Northwest Missouri State). Maher (Ellsworth) would help as well on the O-line.

Drysdale could be the next outstanding kicker at Northern Iowa after going 9-for-13 on field goals and 26-for-28 on PATs for Prairie last fall. He had 11 touchbacks on kickoffs.

The biggest steal on the whole squad could be Vincent, who will be taking his talents to Northwest Missouri State. He looked like a Division I linebacker to me the past few years, but what do I know (not much, apparently).

Several other top Metro seniors are still working on their college selections. Linn-Mar quarterback Ryan Schmidt and Linn-Mar receiver Trevor Noble are going to make somebody happy when they make their decisions. They can certainly play for my team.

Good luck in college, fellas. You treated us to some awfully good football the last few years.
