IOWA CITY - Tennis players from Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington carried their rivalry to the state tournament at the University of Iowa Tennis Center on Thursday.

In an exciting doubles match, Kennedy’s Sarah Lasecki and Kali Hildebrand clipped Washington’s Olivia Brooks and Kristin King, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinal round on Friday.

Lasecki and Hildebrand began the tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over a team from Urbandale in the opening round before posting their victory over Brooks and King. The Cougars will face a team from Iowa City West in the semifinals.

The singles competition featured another Metro battle in the quarterfinals. Washington’s Katie Hammond defeated Kennedy’s Jackie Pedersen, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the semifinals, avenging a loss to Pedersen earlier this season.

Hammond began her day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emily Coe of Ankeny. Hammond will meet Libby Caris of Des Moines Roosevelt in the semifinals on Friday.

The tournament continues on Friday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals and championship matches.
