No. 2 IC West rolls by Waukee - Class 4A roundup

DES MOINES - Jeremy Morgan led five Iowa City West players into double figures Wednesday night as the Trojans punished Waukee, 74-52, in the opening round of the Class 4A state basketball tournament.

Iowa City West (24-0) will face No. 5 Linn-Mar (20-4) in the semifinals Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Dondre Alexander scored 13 points for the Trojans, Myzeah Batie-Gaddy had 12, Austin Swank scored 12 and Wyatt Lohaus notched 11. Iowa City West nearly had a sixth player in double figures as Jake Gylten finished with nine markers.

Jordan Stotts and Cole Pederson led Waukee (17-7) with 14 points apiece.

Iowa City West defeated Linn-Mar, 75-63, in their only meeting during the regular season at Linn-Mar on Dec. 9.

SC EAST 66, WDM VALLEY 60 -- Iowa-bound Adam Woodbury scored 12 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead East to the win.

East (20-3) will play No. 1 Ankeny in the semifinals Friday at 1:45 p.m.

JC Fuller led East with 19 points. Alex Imming added 16 and Marcel Dunson 13.

Nate Meyer led Valley (18-6) with 18 points. Kale Abrahamson, a Northwestern recruit, scored 13 points and Peter Jok 10.

Top 2 teams fall in 3A - Class 3A roundup

TJ Lake scored 14 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter -- including 12 straight -- to lead Western Dubuque past Davenport Assumption, 58-46, Tuesday in the Class 3A quarterfinals of the boys state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Western Dubuque (23-2) faces Sioux City Heelan (18-6) in the semifinals Thursday at 6:35 p.m. The Crusaders knocked off top-seeded MOC-Floyd Valley, 35-33.

Assumption (21-4) held a 35-34 lead after three quarters. The score was tied at 37 when Lake went off.

Lake's 3-pointer with 7:03 left put Western Dubuque ahead to stay, 40-37, and sparked a 12-0 run. He also hit two jump shots and made all four of his free throws, the last with 3:33 left, to push the Bobcats' lead to 49-37.

Assumption never got closer than 10 points the rest of the game.

Logan Pitz added 14 points and five assists for Western Dubuque, and Cameron James had 13 points.

Nick Schebler led Assumption with 12 points. Matt Vonderhaar scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

HEELAN 35, MOC-FLOYD VALLEY 33 -- Kyle Heaton made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 2:05 to lift eighth-seeded Heelan past No. 1 seed MOC-Floyd Valley.

Heaton made a pair of free throws with 1:10 left that gave Heelan (18-6) it first lead of the game, 34-33. He made the first of two free throws with nine seconds left, but missed the second.

A 3-pointer at the buzzer by MOC-Floyd Valley's Keegan Mulder missed and sent the Dutchmen (24-1) to their first loss.

Shane Graves led Heelan with 15 points. Heaton had 11.

Daniel Jansen scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for MOC-Floyd Valley.

GRINNELL 60, WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK 55 -- Grinnell scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to erase a six-point deficit and stunned second-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock.

Grinnell (21-4) will play either Mount Pleasant or ADM Adel in the semifinals Thursday at 8:15 p.m. Mount Pleasant and ADM play Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. in the final Class 3A quarterfinal.

Waverly-Shell Rock (23-2) led 29-18 at halftime and 40-34 at the end of three quarters, but was outscored 26-15 in the final period.

Eli Dunne's three-point play with 57 seconds left gave Grinnell a 55-53 lead. JC Abrahamson added a pair of free throws for the Tigers with 28 seconds left that pushed their lead to 57-53.

Jesse Hendrickson's layup with 17 seconds left cut Grinnell's lead to 57-55, but Dillon Gretzky's two free throws with 12 seconds left stretched the margin back to four. Dunne added a free throw with four seconds left.

Jordan Ely led Grinnell with 15 points. Gretzky had 13, and Dunne and Joe Nowasell 10 apiece.

Hendrickson scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Go-Hawks. Klinton Carlson had 13 points and Jake Velky 10.

MOUNT PLEASANT 62, ADM 32 -- Nick Lyon scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to power Mount Pleasant to the win in Wednesday's Class 3A quarterfinal.

Mount Pleasant (23-2) advances to Thursday's semifinals against Grinnell (21-4) at 8:15 p.m.

Mount Pleasant was never threatened. The Panthers led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter, 29-11 at halftime and 44-24 after three quarters.

Jordan Ashton scored 14 points and Blake Vandenberg added 10 points and seven rebounds for Mount Pleasant. the Panthers shot 53.7 percent from the field.

Alec Rash led ADM (21-4) with 10 points.

St. Edmond upsets PCM - Class 2A roundup

DES MOINES -- Nick Clark scored 25 points and Fort Dodge St. Edmond held off PCM Monroe, 53-52, Tuesday in a Class 2A quarterfinal game of the boys state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Neil Flattery added 16 points for the seventh-seeded Gaels (19-6). St. Edmond advances to the semifinals Thursday against sixth-seeded Clarinda (20-4) at 3:45 p.m.

Jordan Van Roekel led PCM (22-3) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Sean O'Connor had 14 points.

PCM lost despite shooting 61.8 percent for the game and 76.5 percent in the second half.

PCM had four more field goals than St. Edmond, but the Gaels had two more 3-pointers and outscored PCM 12-5 at the free throw line. PCM had 18 turnovers, St. Edmond 10.

St. Edmond never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 16 points.

PCM cut St. Edmond's lead to 50-49 on a 3-pointer by Nathan Vande Wall with 30 seconds left.

Flattery made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to stretch the margin to 52-49. Clark stole the ball with 12 seconds left and was fouled. He made one of two free throws.

PCM's Sean O'Connor hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the game.

CLARINDA 50, ROLAND-STORY 31 -- Jared Stansbury scored 15 points to lead Clarinda past third-seeded Roland-Story and into the Class 2A semifinals.

Clarinda (20-4) shot 51.5 percent for the game and limited Roland-Story (21-4) to 30 percent shooting.

Clarinda built a 22-16 by halftime, led 38-27 after three quarters and put the game away in the fourth, when Roland-Story mustered only four points.

Zach Hovick and Tim Schlorholtz scored eight points apiece for Roland-Story.

Strait tops 5 Metro players on INA all-state teams

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Courtney Strait was honored as a first-team selection on the Iowa Newspaper Association all-state basketball team Tuesday.

Strait, a 5-foot-9 guard, led Class 4A in scoring this season at 20.7 points per game.

Danielle Franklin of Cedar Rapids Washington was a second-team pick on the Class 4A all-state team. Madison Dellamuth of Cedar Rapids Prairie and Emily Walvoord of Xavier were third-team selections in Class 4A. Dani Peyton of Marion was a third-team choice in Class 3A.

Jessie Pauley of Ida Grove OA-BCIG, a Class 2A school, was named Miss Basketball.

Strait was joined on the Class 4A first team by Leti Lerma of Muscatine, Krista Pettepier of Ankeny, Mckenzier Piper of Iowa City West, Jadda Buckley of Mason City, Caitlin Ingle of Southeast Polk, Ally Disterhoft of Iowa City West and Maddie Manning of Ankeny.

Lisbon ousted by St. Mary's - Class 1A roundup

DES MOINES -- Kennedy Drey scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead defending state champion Storm Lake St, Mary's past Lisbon, 62-44, Monday afternoon in a Class 1A quarterfinal game of the boys state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

St, Mary's (26-0) advances to Thursday semifinals against Boyden-Hull (24-2) at 12:15 p.m.

Luke Lenhart added 21 points for St. Mary's, which led 20-8 after one quarter and 39-19 at halftime. The Panthers shot 60 percent in the first half and 56 percent for the game.

Ben Knake scored 17 points and Jake Hendricks 10 for Lisbon (20-7). The Lions wre making their first state tournament appearance.

BOYDEN-HULL 64, IOWA MENNONITE 44 -- Bryce Moss scored 18 points, Taylor Francis 16 and Brandt Van Roekel 15 to lead third-seeded Boyden-Hull.

Boyden-Hull (24-2) led by only 30-28 at halftime and 46-38 after three quarters, but outscored IMS 18-6 in the final period to pull away for the win. The Comets shot 61.1 percent in the second half.

Chance Miller scored 15 points and Cameron Gingerich 13 for IMS (22-5).

DANVILLE 68, COUNCIL BLUFFS ST. ALBERT 39 -- Danville had too many Soukups on the court for St. Albert.

Steven Soukup scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Michael Soukup scored 16 points to lead top-seeded Danville (26-0) into the semifinals against fifth-seeded Nodaway Valley (23-2) Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Collin Bartsch scored 15 points for Danville, which shot 56 percent for the game and made 16 of 22 shots (72.7 percent) in the second half.

Danville also had a 39-18 edge in rebounding.

Connor Thomas' 15 points led St. Albert (14-11).

NODAWAY VALLEY 62, NORTH IOWA 40 -- Dan Ehrsam scored 20 points and Alex Welsch had a double-double to lead fifth-seeded Nodaway Valley to the upset win over No. 4 seed North Iowa.

Welsch scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Nodaway Valley (23-2). TJ Bower added 14 points.

Eric Krull and Troy Kettwick scored nine points apiece to lead North Iowa (23-3). The Bison shot 31.5 percent.
