Mount Vernon downs North Cedar - Class 2A roundup

Jack Keleher scored 11 points for Mount Vernon.

Jordan Hay scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead North Cedar (20-5).

Hay's jumper 20 seconds into the game gave North Cedar its only lead, 2-0.

Russell's layup tied the game aand the Mustangs took the lead for good, 5-2, on Keleher's 3-point basket with 5:57 left in the first quarter.

MFL MARMAC 73, SIOUX CENTER 72 -- MFL MarMac's CJ Mason made three free throws in the final nine seconds for a four-point lead and the top-seeded Bulldogs held off No. 8 seed Sioux Center.

MFL MarMac (24-1) advances to Thursday's semifinals at 2 p.m. against Mount Vernon (21-4).

The Bulldogs held a one-point lead with 11 seconds left and had Jacob Dotzler at the free throw line for two shots. He missed both and Sioux Center's Steven Kragt grabbed the rebound.

But Sioux Center was assessed a technical foul because Beau Boer, who picked up his fifth foul that sent Dotzler to the line, was still on the court when Dotzler shot his free throws, making him an illegal player. After a conference at the scorers' bench, the technical foul was called.

Mason made both free throws for a 72-69 lead, then was fouled again after a Sioux Center turnover and made one of two shots for a 73-69 lead with eight seconds left. Sioux Center's Andrew O'Donnell hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Mason led a quartet of MFL scorers in double figures with 17 points. Dotzler had 13 points.

Boer led Sioux Center (18-7) with 15 points. O'Donnell had 14 and TJ Buyert added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Iowa City West drops Ankeny in OT for 4A title

DES MOINES -- After a second-place finish a year ago, Iowa City West took it all the way to the top this time.

The second-ranked Women of Troy regrouped after letting a 12-point lead slip away and beat No. 4 Ankeny 61-56 in overtime to win the Class 4A championship Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

After regulation play ended in a tie at 52, West scored the first eight points of the overtime and held on to win its first girls basketball title. West had never played in the state tournament until last year, when the Women of Troy lost to Des Moines East in the championship game.

Tatum Klein led West with 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left that tied the score and produced overtime. Shelly Stumpff added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Women of Troy and Ally Disterhoft scored 12.

Maddie Manning had 24 points and nine rebounds in a strong performance for Ankeny, which rallied after trailing by 12 points in the first half and by six in the fourth quarter. Her two free throws gave the Hawkettes a 52-49 lead with 35.1 seconds remaining.

But Klein found an opening on the perimeter and tied it with a clutch shot.

Shayla Starkenburg scored 11 points for Ankeny, while teammate Madi Robson had eight points and seven rebounds. Ankeny was hurt when Manning, who has signed with Oklahoma, fouled out with 1:22 left in the overtime.

Stumpff's free throw in overtime put West ahead to stay and Mckenzie Piper slipped under the basket to make a reverse layup, giving her team a 55-52 lead. The Women of Troy then wrapped up the victory by making six of 10 free throws.

West finished with a 25-1 record, the only loss coming to Class 3A champion Davenport Assumption. Ankeny, which has won nine state titles, lost in the championship game for only the second time and finished 22-4.

Manning was named captain of the all-tournament team and was joined on that unit by teammate Krista Pettepier, Klein, Disterhoft, Southeast Polk's Caitlin Ingle and Waukee's Britney Boland.

Assumption rolls to 3A championship

DES MOINES -- Make it two in a row for Davenport Assumption.

Fourth-ranked Assumption jumped to a big lead early and went on to beat No. 2 MOC-Floyd Valley 59-32 to win its second straight Class 3A state championship Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Knights had excellent balance on offense and bottled up the previously unbeaten Lady Dutch with aggressive play on the defensive end. Assumption built a 16-point lead early in the second quarter and was in control the rest of the way.

The title was the third for Assumption in the last five years and each has come under a different coach.

Todd Borrison guided the Knights to the Class 2A championship in 2008, they won last year under Jennifer Goetz and claimed this year's title with former Assumption star Mallory Youngblut as coach.

Assumption's championship capped a 25-2 season. MOC-Floyd Valley, which was unbeaten entering the state tournament for the second straight year, finished 27-1.

Grace Fennelly led Assumption with 12 points, while all-tournament captain Hailey Schneden added 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

Schneden, a 6-foot-2 junior, blocked a 3A record 13 shots in a semifinal victory over Ballard and finished the tournament with 20 blocks, two short of the class record. She did not miss a shot in the championship game, going 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line.

Danielle Moore and Kate Fennelly each scored nine points for Assumption and Fennelly handed out five assists.

Alexis Conaway, MOC-Floyd Valley's outstanding sophomore, led her team with 13 points and six rebounds. Trisha De Jong added six points for the Lady Dutch.

Assumption broke the game open with a 22-3 run that wiped out MOC-Floyd Valley's early 5-2 lead and put the Knights up 24-8 early in the second quarter. Six different players scored during the run, with Grace Fennelly getting eight. She scored twice after following up her own miss, drive for a basket and sank two free throws.

The lead was never below 12 points after that. The Knights led 33-19 at halftime and finished the third quarter with eight straight points to go up 45-25, Schneden making two free throws and Moore knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

Kate Fennelly, Moore and Conaway joined Schneden on the all-tournament team. Also named to the honor unit were Lauren McDonald of MOC-Floyd Valley and Madison Yohe of Sioux City Bishop Heelan.
