Xavier girls 5th heading into postseason

The Xavier Saints have the best chance among Metro schools of making the Class 4A girls state basketball tournament, based on the final regular-season rankings announced Monday.

Xavier (16-5) is ranked No. 5 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), the only Metro school in the top 10 this week.

Kennedy (12-9) dropped from No. 7 to No. 12 after being upset by Marion Saturday night. Washington (13-7) fell from No. 10 to No. 13 and the fading Prairie Hawks dropped out of the top 15 entirely.

Boys state swimming results

MARSHALLTOWN -- Muscatine swimmers won two relays and three individual events and the Muskies repeated as state champions Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.

Muscatine rolled up 177.5 points to easily beat second-place West Des Moines Dowling, which finished with 135.

Cedar Rapids Washington finished seventh with 115 points. The Warriors did not win any events.

Linn-Mar is ranked fifth and Cedar Rapids Prairie is ranked sixth in the final dual team rankings for the 2011-2012 campaign by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association.

Southeast Polk (22-0) is ranked No. 1, followed by Bettendorf (11-1), Iowa City West (32-3) and West Des Moines Valley (23-1).

Linn-Mar (26-6) will host No. 11 Pleasant Valley (20-7) in the opening round of the regional dual meet tournament Wednesday night. Prairie (27-6) will host No. 10 North Scott (27-7).

Wednesday's winners will advance to the dual team state tournament in Des Moines on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
