Cougars move into boys poll at No. 10

Kennedy jumped into the Associated Press Class 4A boys basketball poll released Monday.

The Cougars' 56-51 win over Linn-Mar on Saturday boosted Kennedy into the rankings at No. 10 and dropped the Lions two places to No. 8.

Linn-Mar (13-4) has a huge game Tuesday when it hosts No. 6 Dubuque Senior (15-2). Senior leads the Lions by one game in the MVC Mississippi Division with four games remaining in the league season. Kennedy is a game behind Linn-Mar.

Kennedy (13-4), meanwhile, hosts No. 1 Iowa City West (17-0) Tuesday, then plays at Jefferson (11-6) on Friday. The J-Hawks were among teams receiving votes and already own a win over the Cougars last month at Kennedy.

MOC-Floyd Valley (19-0) in Class 3A, West Marshall (19-0) in 2A and Danville (19-0) in 1A are the other top ranked teams.

Cougars shoot up Class 4A rankings

Cedar Rapids Kennedy made a huge jump in the girls basketball poll, leaping seven spots to No. 7, in this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 4A rankings.

The Cougars have won six straight games, three over ranked foes. They beat four ranked opponents in January and have a rematch with No. 10 Cedar Rapids Washington on Friday at Washington.

Xavier held down the No. 5 spot. Prairie slipped two spots to No. 12.

Marion dropped out of the Class 3A poll.

Iowa City West dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 after losing to Class 3A second-ranked Davenport Assumption.

Benton is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Linn-Mar, Prairie qualify for dual meet tourney

The regional dual meet wrestling pairings have been announced and Linn-Mar and Prairie will host tournaments on Feb. 8.

Teams were chosen for the dual meet regionals according to their ranking by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association. The top 16 teams qualified for regionals. The winners advance to the state dual meet tournament Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar is seeded No. 6 and will host No. 11 Pleasant Valley.

Prairie is seeded No. 5 and will host No. 12 North Scott.

The regional tournaments start at 7 p.m.

The Class 2A and 1A dual meet regional pairings will be determined by team results from sectional qualifying meets Feb. 4. The dual meet regionals will be held Feb. 7.

Xavier moves up, Kennedy moves in to girls hoop polls

Xavier moved up, Washington, Prairie and Marion slipped down, and Kennedy sneaked into this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union girls basketball polls.

Xavier (12-4) moved up four spots to No. 5 in the Class 4A poll after whipping Waterloo West, 53-30, knocking the Wahawks out of the rankings.

Washington (9-5) dropped two spots to No. 7 after losses to No. 2 Southeast Polk and No. 6 Iowa City High. Prairie (11-4) slipped a spot after a 58-52 loss to Kennedy.

Kennedy moved back into the poll after knocking off ranked foes Ames and Prairie. The Cougars (8-6) are No. 14.

Marion (11-4) slid three spots to No. 15 in the Class 3A poll.

Linn-Mar only Metro boys team in rankings

Linn-Mar held onto third place in the Associated Press Class 4A boys basketball poll released Monday.

The defending state champion Lions (9-2) hold a one-point lead over No. 4 West Des Moines Valley (11-2).

Iowa City West (13-0) and Ankeny (13-0) are ranked 1-2.

Jefferson fell out of the poll after its loss last week to unranked Davenport Central. The J-Hawks received four votes. Kennedy received two.

Waverly-Shell Rock (13-0), West Marshall (15-0) and Danville (15-0) remain the top ranked teams in Classes 3A, 2A and 1A, respectively.
