Lions up to No. 5 in boys basketball poll

Linn-Mar's excellent adventure to Sioux City last weekend boosted the Lions into the No. 5 spot in this week's Associated Press Class 4A boys basketball poll.

Linn-Mar (6-2) knocked off South Sioux City, Neb., 81-62, and Sioux City Heelan, 49-46, and moved up four spots in the poll. The Lions won three games last week.

Jefferson (7-2) fell two spots in the poll to No. 10. The J-Hawks lost twice, but both were to highly ranked foes. They were beaten by No. 3 Dubuque Senior, 61-46, then lost a 50-49 nail biter to No. 1 Iowa City West.

Prairie moves into girls top 10

Four straight wins have moved Cedar Rapids Prairie into the top 10 of the Class 4A girls basketball poll.

The latest Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union rankings were released Thursday.

Xavier (10-2) continues to be ranked No. 5 and Cedar Rapids Washington (5-2) is No. 9.

Prairie (7-3) moved up one spot to No. 10 after throttling Waterloo East, 81-27, Tuesday. The Hawks host No. 8 Iowa City High (9-2) Friday night.

Marion (7-1) moved up one spot to No. 11 in the Class 3A poll. The Indians have a tough task Friday night at No. 2 Benton (10-0). They then host No. 7 Dubuque Wahlert (8-2) Saturday night.

Linn-Mar (6-5) dropped out of the 4A poll after four straight losses.

Iowa City West (10-0) remains the top-ranked team in Class 4A. The Women of Troy host Cedar Rapids Jefferson (5-5) Friday night.

Prairie and Linn-Mar in dual meet rankings

Cedar Rapids Prairie is ranked No. 6 and Linn-Mar No. 9 in Class 3A in the first dual meet rankings released by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association.

Prairie and Linn-Mar have split a pair of dual meets.

Bettendorf is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. Southeast Polk is No. 2 and Iowa City West No. 3.

Davenport Assumption is No. 1 in Class 2A and Nashua-Plainfield is No. 1 in Class 1A.

Saints up to 5th, Prairie cracks girls poll

Xavier moved up three spots to No. 5 and Prairie jumped into this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 4A basketball poll.

Xavier (9-2) replaced Cedar Rapids Washington at No. 5. The Saints handed Davenport Assumption its first loss Tuesday, dropping the Knights from No. 2 to No. 3 in the Class 3A poll.

Washington (5-1) fell to No. 9 after an overtime loss to Waterloo West on Tuesday at Washington.

Prairie (6-3) jumped into the poll at No. 11. The Hawks have won three straight games, including a 20-point rout of then-No. 10 Linn-Mar and a 19-point win over Class 3A No. 12 Marion.

Despite three straight losses that dropped its record to 6-4, Linn-Mar fell only two spots to No. 12. The Lions were beaten by Prairie last Friday, lost to Illinois top-ranked Quincy Notre Dame on Saturday and were beaten by No. 1 Iowa City West on Tuesday.

Despite the loss to Prairie, Marion (7-1) is still ranked No. 12 in Class 3A.

Several Metro girls ranked among the top statistical performers over the past week. Kennedy's Courtney Strait scored 30 points against Iowa City High on Friday, Washington's Dani Franklin had 27 points Tuesday against Waterloo West, and Xavier's Alex Bartz had a state-high 13 blocks Tuesday against Assumption.

J-Hawks rise, Lions fall in boys poll

Jefferson moved up to No. 8 and Linn-Mar fell to No. 9 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A boys basketball poll.

Jefferson (6-0) posted a pair of wins last week and moved up two spots in the rankings. The J-Hawks play at Class 2A No. 10 North Cedar on Tuesday night.

Linn-Mar (3-2) lost an overtime game at Cedar Falls, which moved up to No. 7. The Lions snapped their two-game losing streak by beating Prairie, 68-60, Friday night, but fell six spots in the poll.

Kennedy (4-1) dropped out of the poll after a three-point loss at Dubuque Senior last Tuesday. The Cougars were ranked ninth last week. Dubuque Senior moved up two spots to No. 3.

Iowa City West (6-0) remains the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Class 3A No. 6 Davenport Assumption (4-2) plays at Xavier on Tuesday in a girl/boy doubleheader.

Waverly-Shell Rock (6-0) is ranked first in Class 3A. West Marshall (7-0) moved up to No. 1 in Class 2A and Danville (7-0) is ranked No.1 in 1A.
