Warriors, Indians picked for Rivalry Saturday

Two undefeated girls basketball teams from the Metro area will participate in the "Rivalry Saturday" series of games on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

The undefeated Marion Indians will face Center Point-Urbana at 1 p.m. in the opening game of the event. That game originally was scheduled for Jan. 3, but was switched for "Rivalry Saturday."

The undefeated Washington Warriors will meet Southeast Polk at 4:30 p.m. in the third game of the event.

The annual "Rivalry Saturday" event was switched from the U.S. Cellular Center to Washington High School this year due to remodeling work at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Here is the full schedule:

1 p.m. - Marion vs. Center Point-Urbana
2:45 p.m. - Union vs. South Tama
4:30 p.m. - Southeast Polk vs. Washington
6:15 p.m. - North Linn vs. Monticello
8 p.m. - Williamsburg vs. Benton Community

Warriors move up to No. 5 in girls poll

Four Metro girls basketball teams are ranked in their respective classes in this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union polls.

Cedar Rapids Washington (4-0) moved up two spots to No. 5 in Class 4A. Xavier (8-1) held onto the No. 8 spot and Linn-Mar (6-1) also moved up two spots to No. 10.

Marion, which handed previously-No. 4 Williamsburg one of its two losses last week, moved up one spot to No. 12. The Indians (6-0) are just ahead of Williamsburg, which fell to No. 13.

Iowa City West (7-0) remains the top-ranked team in Class 4A. South Tama (7-0) also is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Linn-Mar drops to 3rd in boys poll

Linn-Mar fell two spots to No. 3 in the Associated Press Class 4A boys basketball poll released Monday.

The Lions (2-1) suffered their first home court loss since 2007 last Friday against Iowa City West, 75-63. The Trojans vaulted from No. 4 to No. 1 on the strength of that win.

Kennedy (3-0) moved up one spot to No. 9 and Jefferson (4-0) broke into the poll tied for No. 10 with Cedar Falls.

Ankeny (4-0) is ranked second in Class 4A. Mississippi valley Conference member Dubuque Senior (3-0) is No. 5.

Waverly-Shell Rock (4-0) is still ranked first in Class 3A and Danville (5-0) is No. 1 in 1A. Monroe PCM (4-2), ranked No. 1 in last week's 2A poll, fell completely out of the rankings after losing two of three games last week.

Five Metro teams in girls basketball polls

Five Metro girls basketball teams are ranked in this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union polls.

Washington, Xavier, Linn-Mar and Kennedy are ranked in the Class 4A poll. Marion also broke into the Class 3A rankings.

Washington (2-0) remained ranked No. 7. Xavier (5-1) moved up to No. 8, Linn-Mar (5-1) is No. 12 and Kennedy (3-1) is No. 14.

Xavier plays at Kennedy on Friday night. Jefferson hosts No. 11 Iowa City High (5-1).

Marion (4-0) is ranked 13th in Class 3A. The Indians host unranked Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday.

Iowa City West remains the top-ranked in Class 4A. South Tama is No. 1 in 3A, replacing Williamsburg. OA-BCIG and North Mahaska are No. 1 in Classes 2A and 1A, respectively.
