Sam Wagner ranked 2nd in state in diving

Linn-Mar senior Sam Wagner is ranked as one of the top divers in Iowa this season.

Wagner is ranked No. 2 in the six-dive competition with 262.8 points and is listed No. 4 in the 11-dive competition with 384.3 points, according to the IGHSAU website.

Linn-Mar senior Emilie Berg is ranked third in the state in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.93). The Lions are ranked third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.58) and fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:54.56).

Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore Jackie Hughes is ranked fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.63) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:13.27).

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Lexi Scharmer is ranked 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.11). The Cougars are ranked fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.68), eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:55.96) and ninth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.01).

Linn-Mar is ranked seventh in the team standings. Kennedy is ninth, Washington 15th and Jefferson 28th.

The top 10 teams in the state are Ames, Cedar Falls, West Des Moines Valley, Iowa City West, Johnston, Dowling Catholic, Linn-Mar, Pleasant Valley, Kennedy and Waukee.

Cougars move up to No. 7 in volleyball poll

Cedar Rapids Kennedy moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 4A volleyball poll released Wednesday.

Kennedy (20-5) was ranked eighth last week, but finished second in the Dubuque Invitational over the weekend with a 5-1 mark. The Cougars beat Jefferson in three sets Tuesday.

Iowa City West (20-5) moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 and Iowa City High (23-2) moved up a spot to No. 2.

Dubuque Wahlert is top-ranked in Class 3A, Western Dubuque in 2A and Tripoli in 1A.

Linn-Mar up to No. 5 in grid poll

Linn-Mar moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A prep football poll.

The Lions bumped up a spot after previous No. 5 West Des Moines Dowling was beaten by Southeast Polk, 27-9, Friday night. It was the second loss of the season for Dowling, which started the season ranked No. 1. The Maroons also lost star wide receiver Amara Darboh to a separated shoulder.

Linn-Mar (5-0) hosts Dubuque Senior (1-4) Friday night.

Cedar Falls, Iowa City High, West Des Moines Valley and Ankeny remain the top four ranked teams in Class 4A. Iowa City High (5-0) hosts Cedar Rapids Washington (3-2) Friday at Bates Field.

Iowa City West (4-1) moved back into the rankings at No. 9. The Trojans walloped Cedar Rapids Jefferson 63-14 Friday night. They host Cedar Rapids Xavier (3-2) Friday night.

Clear Lake, Iowa City Regina, Council Bluffs St. Albert, LeMars Gehlen and Armstrong-Ringsted are still top ranked in their respective classes.

Lions near the top in cross country rankings

West Des Moines Dowling has the top cross country program in the state, but the Linn-Mar Lions aren't far behind.

The Linn-Mar girls cross country team is ranked No.3 in the state this week and the Linn-Mar boys are ranked No.4, according to the Iowa Association of Track Coaches.

Dowling Catholic is No.1 in the Class 4A boys poll and the Class 4A girls poll, a rare double in any sport. Pleasant Valley is ranked No.3 in the boys poll and No.4 in the girls poll.

The Metro area has three boys teams in the top-10 with Linn-Mar fourth, Washington sixth and Prairie eighth. Kennedy is ranked 10th in the girls poll.

Xavier is ranked 12th in the boys poll in Class 3A.
