Huskies rebuilding boys basketball team

Jeff Pospisil is an eternal optimist.

Graduation claimed the five seniors who helped Cedar Valley Christian compile a successful 14-9 record last year, leaving the cupboard practically bare, but Pospisil looks on the bright side as he rebuilds the program.

"It's going to be a successful season," he said during practice last Friday. "We're going to have good kids, they're going to do a great job.

"I don't know if we're going to win any games, but they're going to go out and give it a good effort," he said. "And we're going to try and come up with game plans that give us a chance. It's a neat group of kids."

Highland ends Cedar Valley's season, 81-70

RIVERSIDE - Cedar Valley Christian School assistant basketball coach Dick Hodge sounded like a coach who actually gave a hoot after his team's Class 1A district tournament basketball game at Highland High School Thursday night.

Huskies caught fire when Muhlbach returned

SHELLSBURG - Will Muhlbach's right knee was bothering him when the basketball season began, so the 6-foot-5 senior decided to skip his final season at Cedar Valley Christian and support his teammates from the stands instead.

It hurt almost as much to sit and watch his lifelong friends playing ball without him.

"I went to one of the games and we weren't 100 percent, so it was kind of hard to watch that," he said Monday night. "So once my knee got better I decided I would go out."

That was in mid-December, and the Huskies have been riding high ever since.

Huskies hope bumpy road ends in Des Moines

Somebody should write a movie about the Cedar Valley Christian boys basketball team, especially if the story has a surprise and happy ending for the Huskies this year.

SCENE I: Only six boys report for practice in November, so the principal and coach (played by the same guy) scours the hallways for help.

SCENE II: The Huskies lose four consecutive games in December by 28, 27, 41 and 27 points, but a key player joins the team after recovering from a knee injury and helps turn things around. Now there are 12 guys on the squad.
