Big openers on tap for Metro gridders

There was no grand design. Nobody sat down and tried to fill the opening night of the 2014 high school football season with intriguing matchups, but that's how it turned out.

No matter where you look, all of the eight Metro teams will have an interesting battle on their hands when they open the campaign Friday night.

You've got the ancient rivalry of Washington vs. Jefferson at Kingston Stadium, with the Warriors looking to build on last year's momentum and the improved J-Hawks looking to accomplish big things this year with newcomer Jesse Furrow at quarterback.

You've got Linn-Mar at Prairie, where the Lions are hoping to rebound from a couple of sub-par campaigns and the Hawks are looking to improve upon a .500 season behind 300-pound lineman Bryce Meeker, a future Iowa State Cyclone.

There's Kennedy at Iowa City West, where both teams have new head coaches who were promoted from within the program.

There's Marion at Mount Vernon, where the Indians will be tackling the start of a demanding schedule.

Cedar Valley tackled big boys this summer

Cedar Valley Christian has suffered some lopsided losses during its three years of playing 8-man football, so why in the world did the Huskies voluntarily play Cedar Rapids Washington, Prairie, Iowa City West and Solon in a 7-on-7 passing league this summer?

It's simple.

Coach Ed Betsworth wanted his players to improve as quickly as possible against the best competition he could find.

"It was a good experience for us," he said. "It was a tough situation, here we are a little 8-man squad and we show up with 11 guys. We played Solon, Iowa City West, Prairie and Cedar Rapids Washington and they're walking in with 30 to 50 boys.

"It was a little bit of a learning experience there, but you know what? I'm pleased with what we did. We held our own.

"We didn't win any games, but gosh, we moved the ball down the field on them and we scored a few times," he said. "That's a good thing, that's a good feeling. We scored against schools that are three to six times bigger than us.

Cougars, J-Hawks lead Metro baseball

This is not shaping up as a particularly good year for high school baseball in the Metro area.

Only Kennedy and Jefferson have winning records in conference games. And only Kennedy, Jefferson and Xavier have winning records overall.

The Xavier Saints suffered a big loss this month when Mitch Keller accepted a $1 million signing bonus from Pittsburgh and left to begin his pro career.

The Linn-Mar Lions also have suffered a big loss with all-state catcher Brandt Ollinger playing travel ball this summer with an all-star team. Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner said Ollinger will be gone for an extended period of time.

Kennedy is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A and Jefferson defeated No. 1 Hempstead in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

Here are the Metro records through June 22:

Kennedy         14-2 overall   10-2 MVC
Jefferson       13-6 overall   8-4 MVC
Xavier          12-8 overall   6-6 MVC
Marion          8-8 overall    6-6 Wamac
