Cedar Valley nipped by Vinton

Cedar Valley Christian battled Vinton-Shellsburg on even terms for most of the afternoon Thursday before losing a tight contest, 1-0, in a boys soccer match at Tuma.

Joseph Zasadny made 14 saves for the Huskies on a chilly and rainy afternoon. Vinton-Shellsburg scored its goal in the 37th minute.

Severson scores for Cedar Valley kickers

Caleb Severson scored a goal for the Cedar Valley Christian soccer team Tuesday in a 7-1 loss to Albia.

Tom Scroggs played the ball off the post, then Megan Slagle touched the ball to Severson who put the ball in the net.

Cedar Valley boots Scattergood, 1-0

WEST BRANCH —  Mike Scroggs scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute of play Thursday as Cedar Valley Christian nipped the Scattergood Friends school, 1-0, in boys soccer.

Keeper Joseph Zasadny was credited with the shutout and three saves.

Cedar Valley Christian falls in shootout

Cedar Valley Christian battled Northeast Goose Lake to a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime, but the hosts were outscored 4-2 in the shootout, losing a 1-0 decision Tuesday at the Tuma Soccer Complex.

Mike Scroggs and Travis Geels connected on penalty kicks for CVC. Joseph Zasadny was strong in goal for Cedar Valley through regulation and the overtime.

8 Metro girls make INA all-state

Eight players from the Metro area were named to the all-state girls basketball teams by the Iowa Newspaper Association Tuesday.

Dani Franklin of Washington was named first team all-state in Class 5A and Shelby Hembera was named first team all-state in Class 1A.

Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Aleena Hobbs of Washington were named second team all-state in Class 5A. Michalyn Mohr of Marion and Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier were honored as second-team selections in Class 4A.
